"Porterhouse Heating and Cooling was very professional and knowledgeable on the service provided. I used them to install my air conditioner unit. Eventhough, the unit was not my issue, they still came out and was able to find the issue and fix it. They were friendly, professional, and reasonably priced. "Had water tank and HVAC system replaced. Karen provided full overview and options at estimate appointment. She was available by phone for all questions and concerns. Was able to get same week installation. Both Jorge’s & Jacob’s crews worked well together in same space. They were all responsible, respectful and explained post installation. Referred by my family, past customers."

"Ish installed an air conditioner for me last summer and came back this week to do annual maintenance on it and my furnace. He worked to find an A.C. that fit my budget. He is very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. I did not feel pressured at all. He takes the time to explain what he is doing. He is careful not to damage walls, etc., and is a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend Ish to anyone looking for quality workmanship, a fair price, and pleasant and superior service. Thank you, Ish! See you next year!"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

At a minimum, an HVAC system should be serviced once per year. However, a twice-a-year service schedule—once in the spring for the cooling system and once in the fall for the heating system—is often recommended, especially for older systems, heat pumps, or in climates with extreme temperatures. Regular service, which includes inspection, cleaning, and maintenance, ensures the system runs efficiently, helps prevent costly breakdowns during peak seasons, and can extend the unit's lifespan. You can also schedule a service if you notice issues like poor performance or strange noises.

An HVAC system typically lasts between 10 and 30 years, with an average lifespan of 15 to 25 years. The longevity of the system is influenced by factors such as the quality of the unit, usage frequency, local climate, and how well it is maintained. Regular maintenance, including cleaning, filter replacements, and professional inspections, can help maximize its lifespan. Different components within the system have varying life expectancies. For example:

  • Furnaces: 15 to 30 years

  • Boilers: 20 to 35 years

  • Air Conditioners (AC units): 12 to 20 years

  • Heat Pumps: 10 to 20 years

  • Ductless Mini-Splits: 10 to 30 years

It’s never a good idea to run your AC without a filter, even just for a night. The filter defends your HVAC system from the dust, dirt, debris, and other grime in your home. Without a filter, those contaminants are more likely to get inside your system and potentially damage it.

You can run an HRV with air conditioning—assuming that you decide to keep the system on during the summer. The HRV will continue to bring in fresh outdoor air, which will then flow into your AC unit and cool down your home. It will also keep moving the stuffy indoor air out of your house.

Yes, ventless portable air conditioners exist, and not all standard portable air conditioners must be vented through a window.

Ventless portable units, often called evaporative coolers, do not have exhaust hoses. They use a water reservoir and a cooling pad to add moisture to the air, making it feel cooler. These units work best in dry climates because humid areas cannot absorb much additional moisture.

For standard portable air conditioners that do require venting, a window is not the only option; they can also be vented through a door, wall, or ceiling. However, it is essential to vent these units properly. Running a standard portable AC without venting it is counterproductive because it needs to expel heat to cool the room. Failing to do so will only increase the room's temperature.
