"The chimney project went smoothly. The result of the initial work on the fireplace was less satisfying. Richard Olsen, the owner, agreed with me and had the work redone. He made sure that the end result was something that we both were happy with. I was impressed by his professionalism and the pride he took in the work done by his company. I will not hesitate to hire him again or to recommend him."

"Great. Brian inspected everything including the furnace and hot water heater besides the fireplace. He found a gap in the pipe from the water heater and screwed it down. He also went to the roof and found a problem with the base of the flue. He exceeded all my expectations and may even have saved my life with his repair of the water heater exhaust."

"We woke up to a terrible stench coming out of our fireplace. We knew whatever it was wasn't going to be pretty. We needed help fast. Gem was the first company to answer our call. They sent out Vincent within hours, and he found the culprits-dead squirrels who had gotten trapped in the chimney. Vincent removed them and disinfected the fireplace. Then he inspected both of the chimneys on our 100+ year old house. He showed my husband the camera pics. We needed a new cap on the fireplace chimney and repairs on both chimneys. He came back and fixed everything a week later when the cap came back. Vincent gets 5 stars. I would use them again. The only issue I had was with GEM phone customer service. They had a problem (on their end, not ours) with one of the checks and tried to pressure me into using Zelle. I would have preferred putting it on a credit card, but they don't take them. Credit cards and checks give customers consumer protections."

"Anthony was spectacular. We had Top Hat out to inspect our three gas fireplaces and our chimneys. After removing the vermiculite and spent ash from the bottom of the fireplaces to clean and inspect, Anthony identified that prior to our purchase of the house the fireplaces had been improperly converted from wood to gas. One fireplace did not have a fire box, one fire box had been improperly installed and the third was made from gerry rigged materials that were not fit for purpose. One of the the black pipe connections was made without pipe dope/sealant. One fireplace had a crimped supply line. One fireplace had a 12" bar for a 24" fireplace which was intended to be a starter for a wood fire, not to be used to run a continous gas fireplace. All three posed CO2 hazards. Anthony photographed everything for us, fully explained the issues and remedied all. He was polite, thorough and efficient and fairly priced. Highly recommend Anthony and Top Hat!"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

The time it takes for creosote to build up in a chimney can vary depending on how often you use your fireplace and the wood you burn. Creosote can start accumulating after just a few fires, especially if you burn unseasoned wood or allow fires to smolder. Regularly using the fireplace without proper maintenance can lead to significant creosote buildup within a few months. To prevent hazardous buildup, have your chimney inspected and cleaned at least once a year.

A fireplace hearth is necessary in most areas per building codes, especially for gas and wood-burning fireplaces. Electric fireplaces may not require a hearth, so check local building codes or ask a pro for guidance if you’re leaning toward electric. A fireplace hearth can decrease the risk of flying embers creating a fire and burning your home down. That’s why fireproof material, like tile, is used for the hearth.

Gas-powered fireplaces seem to be the most desirable type for homebuyers, per a Redfin report on homebuying trends. That said, any fireplace that has been maintained well and is in safe, working condition could be a draw for buyers, regardless of whether it uses wood logs, propane, or electricity as fuel.

No, a chimney crown is not the same as a chimney cap. A chimney crown is a flat cement area on top of a masonry chimney. It starts where the masonry part of the chimney ends at the very top and domes upward toward the flue opening. A chimney cap sits on top of the crown over the flue. It is usually made of metal and allows smoke to escape without letting in rainwater.

How you stop your fireplace from smoking depends on the cause. Sometimes it’s as simple as opening the damper. Other times, you need to battle air pressure. The best course of action is to ensure proper ventilation, whether that means opening a door or a window; avoid building a large fire, which produces more smoke; and use seasoned hardwoods, which produce less smoke than other types of wood. If the issue persists, call a pro ASAP.
