"About a year ago we had our frame braced and bolted to the foundation (seismic retrofit) . The Foundation Works did a top notch job with a professional crew at every step. Their price was similar to other bids and they worked with us through the Earthquake Brace and Bolt program. They also stuck to their time lines. We were very happy with them, but here's the cherry on top. We had copper pipes installed recently. When the county inspector was out to inspect that job, he looked at the work under the house. He asked us who did our brace and bolt job. We told him and asked why. He said he could see that they did a really great job."

"I hired Alpha Structural to earthquake brace and bolt my 1924 bungalow. The project took two days. The team was fantastic, starting with Project Mgr, Aldo. All the guys respected my property and left so clean you can't they were here. I highly recommend Alpha Structural for any foundation work you may need"

"I am very pleased with the back-yard patio Conrad and his crew installed. Cost was very competitive. Timeline for project was very close to original estimate. Conrad was very helpful in helping us make final design decisions, especially on picking the paver block style and color. He also promptly addressed all of me concerns, even though they were mostly minor. His crew also worked with me to get the final outline of the patio, with many curves. Del Mar Landscaping is definitely on the top of my list for any future landscaping work."

"Doheny concrete is one of the last honest construction companies that does quality work. They gave us a fair price for foundation repair of our house after an outrageous quote from another company. They helped us get our house back on the market. They immediately responded to any questions/concerns. I highly recommend!"

"The project went very well. The painting and tile work came out to be amazing. Great quality and attention to detail. The staff and the owners (they are brothers) are very friendly, very courteous, and easy to work with. I would recommend Top Concrete Design to friends and family members. For future projects, I am planning on coming for their help again."

"David came to my house exactly on time. He brought with him 2 of his workers for the inspection as well. I expected that, no matter what, they'd find something wrong that needed costly fixing. But they were super honest and, after taking a look, told me that I only needed very minimal work and that overall my foundation was fine. Thank you David for your honesty!!"

"From start to finish, Motti and Rand of Green Republic Landscapes conducted themselves like true professionals. I asked them to design a yard that would be maintenance-free, drought-tolerant and conform to the turf removal rebate rules. They turned my dull, grass-filled yard into a beautiful, usable yard. They handled everything, from the removal of the grass to conditioning the soil to reinforcing the existing fence. In addition, they installed a paver patio and pathway and DG and gravel throughout the rest of the yard. Now I have a great space for relaxing and entertaining. I couldn't be happier. I would recommend Green Republic Landscapes to anyone."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

The material you use depends on how hard-wearing your steps need to be and what you want them to look like. The most common stone for exterior steps is bluestone. It’s hard-wearing and durable, and bluestone steps cost between $15 and $30 per linear foot. Limestone is also a popular option and is mid-range, costing $25 to $50 per linear foot. You should always consider the specific requirements of your project before ordering any materials.

Drilling into brick or mortar requires the use of a masonry drill bit. Masonry drill bits appear similar to standard drill bits except for the leading tip of the bit. The tip has a bulky carbide arrow-shaped end slightly larger than the rest of the bit shaft. Standard or high-speed drill bits designed for making holes in wood or metal don’t have the ruggedness or design shape you need to drill into brick. They may not go through the brick at all, and if they do, they’re more likely to overheat, crack, or dull before you finish drilling.

Do not use super glue to hang lights on brick unless you want your lights up year-round. Hot glue is a better choice because it’s easily removable with a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Super glue is very hard to remove, and you could tear off parts of the brick in the removal process.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

Rock salt and ice melts contain sodium chloride, aka salt, and are corrosive to metal and concrete. If used frequently over time, it can cause corrosion, discoloration, chipping, and cracking to patios, walkways, and driveways. You can try a rock salt alternative or hire a professional snow removal company instead.
