"Alex was hired to replace my water service line in Lake Stevens. He was very responsive, completed the work as planned and we had very limited water disruptions. I will recommend his company to others and keep him on speed dial in case we need plumbing services in the future. Great work Pete’s Plumbing!"

"They worked with me on all steps. Everything explained fully. Told me the access they would need for all work well ahead of time and I was able to schedule the work time so I wouldn't be rushed in moving things. They gave me options, I selected the option that I felt worked best for me and they did it. On time, on cost. Cleaned as they went. Arranged their work sequencing so that we wouldn't spend a night without gas (for hot water and furnace). Nice people at all stages."

"Perms-Dry did an outstanding job. They explained the work to be done in detail, arrived on time, completed the work in one day. Their workers professional and did a great job of cleaning up once the work was complete. I have seen no signs of water issues since they installed the system"

"Great Service!!! I had a clog in my main sewer line. Called around 7am and was able to schedule an estimate same day. Got a call back from Andrew and was able to have them come in sooner, which was awesome! Plumbers David & Chris was courteous, friendly and professional. They were able to fix my issue swiftly and jet the roots out as well. I love the fact that they made sure that everything was working correctly before leaving, to ensure the issue has been resolved. They even ran a camera down my sewer line to insure me all the roots were gone, got a video as well. I had the same issue previously and called another company. I had to call them twice because they did not resolve the issue on both times out here. Hagee Plumbing fixed it.

"Greg is an outstanding inspector who helped us pull an offer from the first home we tried buying and helped us pull the trigger on buying the second. His work has helped us prioritize what needs to be done first, and postpone optional upgrades (we bought a 100-year-old house). He is a master of understanding the house's structural integrity, safety hazards, and moisture/water control. I would highly recommend him and our agent has already started recommending him regularly. If you are looking for the most thorough, straight-shooting, no-nonsense inspector, Greg is your guy. We also got a nice PDF outlining everything that is super easy to read while being incredibly detailed."

"Great! Daniel was quite a bit late from another job and didn't do a good job communicating that (I had to call the office to get updates). However, once he arrived, he did a great job of (1) listening to what the problem was, (2) talking me through my options, (3) providing an emergency fix so that we wouldn't have to live without hot water for the weekend. Estimated price seemed high, but in the right ballpark. For the second visit, Daniel was on time, did all the work in the expected time, and came in below his estimate. He was helpful and answered all my questions and showed me how to plumb the drain. Altogether, quite pleased."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

You can install a water softener system by turning off the water supply, draining the water, and then connecting your device to the waterline. Next, you’ll fill your tank with the recommended amount of salt or brine (whichever your unit calls for; be sure to read the instructions). Turn the water supply on and check for leaks. You can opt to let your water run for a few minutes, then test it using strips.

The process of inspecting your water softener system is similar.

The chemicals in a water softener can wear down the anode rod in the heater and shorten its life span. However, for most people, the benefits of the softener outweigh this potential drawback.

Have a plumber inspect the anode rod annually for damage, as replacing the anode rod is far less expensive than replacing the entire water heater.

It’s not a good idea to oversize your water softener. Doing so will mean the tank doesn’t get full, which can lead to channeling. This leads to a large portion of the resin beads not being utilized and the beads at the bottom of the tank being overused. Over time, this will reduce the efficiency of your system, not to mention that the upfront cost of an oversized softener is unnecessarily high. If you have a timed regeneration cycle rather than a demand-based one, you’ll also spend far more on replacing salt than you need to.

Hard water doesn’t hurt, but it might feel more abrasive, especially if you have sensitive skin. It’s also about how your skin feels after bathing. You might feel as though you have a sticky film over your body because you do—it’s all that soapy residue left behind because the hard water can’t rinse it off completely.

If your water softener repair is fairly straightforward, like a simple filter replacement, then you can probably do it yourself with little risk. However, anything beyond a simple fix should be addressed by someone with extensive plumbing expertise to avoid costly water softener problems, like leaks.

That said, even simple problems can be complicated to diagnose, particularly if your water softener is attached to a whole-house treatment system. So, unless you feel absolutely certain that the problem is an easy fix that you can take on yourself, it's probably best to hire a plumber to diagnose and fix the problem.
