"Our home had inadequate electric service. McCarthy Electric provided a bid to install 200 amp service to support our growing needs. My interactions with their team has been the most satisfying experience I have had with a service provider. The service was upgraded per the bid with no drama, in a timely fashion. I was kept informed of important developments in a courteous and professional manner. I will be a return customer for any future electrical needs."

"I couldn't have hoped for a better experience. The scheduling was professional and prompt, the service was spot on and high quality. They arrive in a nice truck with lots of supplies, and do a quick estimate, then get right into it. I had a list of jobs saved up, which included installing new bathroom fixtures and new outlets. Everything was done just right and the area left clean and everything tested out to my satisfaction. No surprise in the bill and I felt it was a fair price. "I needed electrical charger installed in my home and I inquired on Angie's list. Superior Electric was the first one to respond and came out first thing next morning. John, Sam and Angelo were great guys to work with. Being a nonprofit, we always look for people who can work with our limited budget. They were professional and courteous. They did work as they said promptly and efficiently explaining everything along the way. I would recommend these guys anytime to the people who needs their electrical work done."

"Nathan installed several outlets in our garage , a new security light behind the garage, and corrected the wiring to our court lights. He did a great job with all the work, routing the wiring very neatly, installed the outlets where I wanted them and advised me on the best way to get what I needed. He was very open to all my questions as well as my grandson’s questions about why Nathan did things a certain way. Nathan was very patient and made sure we both understood the reasons and methods for his work. Excellent work ethic. Highly recommend Nathan for any electrical work you and your friends/family might have."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Yes, the National Electric Code (NEC) requires at least one GFCI outlet in each sectioned-off portion of an unfinished basement, partly to ensure a power source is available for a sump pump in case of flooding. If you install multiple outlets in your unfinished basement, all of them must be GFCI-protected. For finished basements, standard outlets are generally permitted, but at least one GFCI outlet is still required per circuit. Keep in mind that local municipalities may have additional codes, so it's best to consult a licensed electrician to ensure your home is fully compliant.

Unless you’re a licensed electrician, you should not DIY any electrical work in your home. Working with wires and electricity is potentially dangerous to both you and the structure you’re working on, and it could lead to house fires or electric shock if you’re not 100% sure what you’re doing. There’s a big difference between changing a light switch cover and rewiring an entire home. If you’re staring down a potentially difficult electrical job, give a pro a call.

To ensure batteries stop charging when they’re full, you’ll need to install a charge controller that determines when the battery is full. Once the battery is fully charged, the charge controller will stop the energy flow or divert the energy to the grid or other appliances. Without a charge controller, the battery may continue to charge, which can lead to less productivity and potential damage.

According to the National Electrical Code® (NEC®), the electrical code for kitchen outlets states that electrical outlets in a kitchen should be installed no more than 48 inches apart. This ensures that a receptacle is no further away than 24 inches from any place on the countertop. Countertops wider than 12 inches need an outlet on the wall above the countertop.

A 60W LED bulb is likely labeled as “60W replacement” on the package—that’s because it provides about the same light output as a 60W incandescent bulb. In reality, it likely uses less energy—usually 15 watts or less. If that’s the case, then it’s perfectly fine to put a 60W LED bulb in a 40W socket. Your best bet is to read the package carefully. It will tell you the LED bulb’s actual wattage, and as long as it’s lower than the fixture, the bulb will be safe to use.
