"We happened to discover a small leak on our water main pipe and called Vlad out. He came out the next day and gave us a quote and didn't happen to have the parts on hand (we have an OLD house), but said he'd get back to us as soon as he could, even though he was fully booked for the week. He came back the next day and worked through lunch (thank you Vlad!) to get it done. And thank goodness -- the pipe actually split apart in his hands. If we'd left it much longer it might have blown and flooded our basement!!!"

"Everything went well and smooth with their help. I got the proposal with all details at the same day when they came to do the estimate. Our old furnace was built on 1971, and it was in a closet next to the water heater tank. When one other company came to estimate, they wanted to cut a furnace size hole on the wall facing the hallway to fit the machine and we have to find a constructor or handy man to finish, like to build a door or make it look good, but G&S figured out an easy way, which is to turn the machine toward another direction and eventually only cut a vent on the wall. It took two days for all the installation, and they cleaned up when they left and everything looked clean and nice. They also listened to customers. We didn't want the heat pump to be right next to the stairs of our deck, so they chose a spot which was few feet away from the closest spot without any question. We appreciate for that, since the wind blows out from heat pump is kind of strong, and we feel comfortable with where it is at now. One thing I really like is they were on time, and they called around 30 minutes ahead before them showed up. They also take care all the paperwork for the PUD rebate, Costco 10% shop card, and city permits, and all we do is waiting their call to arrange the time."

"The Plumbing Joint was easy to schedule and was on-time in arriving and the plumbers who showed up were polite and professional. However, their leak detection and problem solving skills were lacking. I had the Plumbing Joint come out twice for the same issue. The first plumber spent 15 minutes and determined that the leak was under the slab of the house and that I'd need to get a leak detection specialist out to find it. I contacted the recommended leak specialist who came out and quickly determined that the leak was not under the slab and commented that the plumber should have been able to determine this because the rate of the leak based on the meter did not represent such an issue. The second plumber from the Plumbing Joint came out and he was a bit more thorough, but ultimately he declared that I did not have a leak despite the water on my floor appearing regularly over several weeks. After another week of cleaning up water and having water re-appear I called The Plumbing Joint and asked if they wanted a 3rd attempt to come fix the issue at their expense before I wrote my review. I was told that would require manager approval and they would call me back. There was no call-back, so I contacted a competitor who was able to find and fix the issue in one visit."

"Perms-Dry did an outstanding job. They explained the work to be done in detail, arrived on time, completed the work in one day. Their workers professional and did a great job of cleaning up once the work was complete. I have seen no signs of water issues since they installed the system"

"Within the last few years, we have had Overlake Heating and Air Conditioning install a furnace, hot water heater, replace and install gas lines for a gas stove, fireplace and gas barbeque.  All of these projects were done with professionalism and quality and at a reasonable price.  Recently, we had them install an air conditioner.  The installers were at our home at the expected time, and the installation was completed within the timeline given.  The installers were very conscientious of the work area and the quality of work was exceptional.

"i didn't hire directly.  they came via a home insurance company referral to look at a problem.
they were solid.  liked the guy who came out.  he tried his best to get our water heater replaced by the water heater company, but ultimately they would only pay for a replacement, at which point i cut my losses and hired someone else - b/c the water heater was 19 years old and it would have been a temporary fix.

"Vortex Plumbing did a great job! It was quite an extensive process. It takes days to re-pipe a whole house and I was expecting to be without running water for a few of those. Baldeep did his best to make our inconvenience as little as possible. He and his crew did as much preparation as possible and only had to turn off our water for about 3 hours during the whole process. Vortex Plumbing is a professional and honest company and I would use them again in the future."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

A water softener is a worthwhile investment if you live in an area with hard water. While hard water is safe to drink, it contains minerals like calcium and magnesium that can cause significant problems over time. These minerals build up inside pipes, reducing water flow and eventually corroding the plumbing system, which can lead to leaks and a shortened lifespan. Hard water also damages fixtures and appliances, potentially resulting in costly repairs. Additionally, it makes soaps and detergents less effective, meaning you'll use more product to get things clean. By installing a water softener, you can prevent these issues. The initial investment is often recouped through long-term savings, including lower energy bills, reduced appliance and plumbing maintenance, and spending less on soap and cleaning supplies. Other benefits include cleaner linens, dishes, and clothing, as well as softer water that is gentler on your skin and hair. In some areas, a water softener can also increase your home's value, making it a valuable long-term investment.

Yes, a water softener can remove scale deposits. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, after you add a water softener to your home, “gradually the softer water will dissolve limescale scale deposits and remove the problem entirely.” Installing a water softener—or water descaler—will also help prevent new scale deposits from forming.

Whether you need a permit or license for a water softener installation depends on your location, as requirements vary significantly. Some municipalities require the installer to hold a plumbing license, some mandate a permit and an inspection, and others require both. In some areas, no special permit or license is needed at all.

To determine the rules in your area, you can contact your local building department or consult a local water softener installer or plumber. Often, only certified professionals are authorized to pull the necessary permits, and they will typically handle the entire permitting process for you. Regardless of local laws, it is always recommended to hire a licensed professional to ensure the system is sized and installed correctly. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to check an installer’s license status.

If your water softener repair is fairly straightforward, like a simple filter replacement, then you can probably do it yourself with little risk. However, anything beyond a simple fix should be addressed by someone with extensive plumbing expertise to avoid costly water softener problems, like leaks.

That said, even simple problems can be complicated to diagnose, particularly if your water softener is attached to a whole-house treatment system. So, unless you feel absolutely certain that the problem is an easy fix that you can take on yourself, it's probably best to hire a plumber to diagnose and fix the problem.

Routine maintenance involves recharging the resin bed with salt or potassium, cleaning components, and periodic inspection.
