"We have been working with Switch Electric on various projects in our home since 2018. They installed our solar panels, our backup battery and have worked on electrical projects. Switch Electric is our go-to electrical company and we will continue using them in the future. It’s easy to get appointments, communication is great, and the people are wonderful."

"I have had the pleasure of working with Smart Electric for a couple years now. I am a Project Manager for a Custom Home Builder and this company has it dialed in! Joe is amazing to work with. He excels in putting together bids quickly, being very communicative, and is always very professional. They also have an all-star crew. Jason and Keith are some of the best electrical leads I have worked with. They always have a great attitude onsite. Also a shout out to the office staff Sammy & Molly are great to work with. They are always on top of scheduling inspections and communicating updates with me. Highly recommend Smart Electric!"

"I have used MIke and the folks from his company on a number of prior electrical jobs as I upgrade the electrical work in my old condominium unit. MIke and his associates have always done a great job (prompt, timely completion, clear communication before hand and great job at a reasonable price). Would use them again."

Small jobs welcome

"Our home had inadequate electric service. McCarthy Electric provided a bid to install 200 amp service to support our growing needs. My interactions with their team has been the most satisfying experience I have had with a service provider. The service was upgraded per the bid with no drama, in a timely fashion. I was kept informed of important developments in a courteous and professional manner. I will be a return customer for any future electrical needs."

"We had In-House Electrical replace/upgrade our main panel as well as setup a generator hook-up and A/C outlet outside. Adam and Avery were phenomenal - they were thorough, kept in constant communication with me during the project to ensure things were being done as I liked, and left the place looking better than when they showed up. They'll be my first call in the future for any electrical work I need done."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

If you’re wondering whether an electrical panel in the bathroom needs to be moved, the answer is yes. Due to the risks of shocks and electrical fires, electrical panels cannot be located in bathrooms per National Electric Code Volume 70. Additionally, gasses, vapors, liquids, and temperature fluctuations can all compromise the functionality of your electrical panel, so it’s important to install it in a dry, cool, safe, and easily accessible location.

While you can technically live in a home while it's being rewired, prepare for some debris and dust if your electrical contractor needs to remove parts of walls, floors, and ceilings to access wires. If you stay home during the project, ask your electrician to cut the power supply to all exposed electrical wires to keep your family safe.

Yes, it's possible to have electrical receptacles and overhead lights on the same circuit. The reason is that lights typically use much less power than large appliances, so combining them won't overload your circuit. By doing this, you can distribute the power consumption throughout the breakers in your panel more efficiently, which can be helpful if you have a lot of different electrical devices in your home.

By nature, two-prong outlets aren't grounded—but the box they run to might be, which makes them safer. The safest way to test if an outlet is grounded is to purchase a circuit tester, which cost about $20 at home improvement stores.

If you discover your outlet (or outlets) aren't grounded, know that this greatly increases your risk of personal injury and electrical fires. You may want to consider installing new three-prong ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets. On average, the cost to install GFCI outlets is about $210 per outlet.

No, it’s extremely dangerous to cap off live electrical wires. Working with live wires puts you at serious risk of electric shock, which can cause injury or even be fatal. Whenever you need to cap off electrical wires or complete any electrical work in general, it’s essential to shut the power off at the breaker before you begin.
