Small jobs welcome

"I highly recommend Chris at Eastside Emerald Home Repair! Chris totally remodeled my kitchen & as a result of how great that looks, I had him work on many other smaller projects. Chris is a great communicator, reliable, trustworthy, and creative w/ challenging situations. He is a professional who often exceeds expectations (he can be a perfectionist!). I've referred him to a few friends, who have also been extremly pleased w/ his work. Chris charges a reasonable rate, for the professional job you'll receive. And on top of that, he's also a really nice guy to work with - I can't recommend Chris enough! ð"

"Excellent!! Max called me right away, was here within an hour. Replaced the fan at the back of my freezer and saved all my Costco meat I just bought yesterday. He is Quick with his labor, was done in an hour or less. His fee was affordable!! He gave me a neighborly discount, since he lives nearby. He is going into my speed dial, for all appliance repairs!! I couldn’t be happier!!!"

"My experience with HSR was satisfactory. They dispatched a professional and competent appliance repair expert that was not only knowledgeable regarding appliances but was efficient during his inspection and for the repair itself. My Viking wasn’t cooling and Matt was able to diagnose the problem quickly, fixed it within the same visit."

"Overall, everything went as smoothly as we could have reasonably expected, and we're very happy with the results. We initially met with David to get a quote. Admittedly, the quote we got was quite a bit higher than others we'd gotten, but the other places we got quotes from seemed less professional; less like they had their acts together. David made us feel like everything would go smoothly, which was largely true. After committing to Kitchen Plus we continued working with David on the design and materials. This part went pretty quickly because we already had a pretty good idea of what we wanted, but David was very helpful in talking us through everything. Once we had a design (and had picked out appliances on our own) we had engineering plans done up. Gary came out and did this part, plus all the behind-the-scenes engineering work. There was only one small problem here, where we ended up with a cabinet on the final plans where it couldn't go (due to Bellevue electrical codes, thanks Bellevue), but that just ended up saving us some money on a bit of granite we didn't need. Finally, the project actually started. Tim was our project manager, and we really can't say enough good things about him. He was willing to work with us in our small space (we don't have a garage or any auxiliary rooms, so the appliances had to live in the kitchen space while he worked). He handled all of the small problems that inevitably crop up (for example, we had some bad plumbing from previous alteration which broke while the new plumbing was being installed, and he wrangled the plumbers for us to get it fixed). He was very friendly. And, of course, it looked great when it was done. The actual construction portion of the remodel took just over a month. (June 1 to today, July 7, the appliance installers are working as I type this, which is the last thing.) Kitchen Plus also has someone call you every week to make sure things are going well. In our case it was Janet, who is very friendly. She and David helped us work with their flooring guy to get the rest of our condo re-floored as well, which was awesome. All-in-all, it just felt like the least-stressful kitchen remodel I can imagine. Which isn't to say it wasn't a bit stressful (I don't think that's possible as long as you're living in the same house as the remodel), but everything got handled easily. I'd recommend Kitchen Plus to anyone looking for a nicer kitchen. They aren't inexpensive, but we also didn't get nickel-and-dimed at all. If we end up moving and need another remodel ourselves we'd absolutely go with them again."

Appliance Sales questions, answered by experts

The short answer is no, wall ovens do not need exterior venting. This is because ovens have internal vents which help dissipate the air and control the heat and fumes. Safety is important, which is why built-in ovens have systems inside of them that slowly purge heat and fumes. It is rare for a built-in oven to have a range hood with external ventilation, but this is common for stovetop/oven combination units as they don’t possess the same internal venting technology as wall units.

It depends. Use the “50% rule” to help you decide. For example, you should consider replacing the appliance if it is halfway through its lifespan and the repair will cost more than 50% of the price of a new one. Contrary to popular belief, repairing a major appliance is more wallet-friendly than purchasing a new one. While the cost of new home appliances can run as high as $8,000, the average cost to repair them is $170. If the appliance you’re trying to get rid of isn’t too old, consult a local appliance repair expert to see what can be done to restore it.

Not all dishwasher noises are signs of trouble, as dishwashers naturally make sounds during operation. Normal sounds for a functional dishwasher include humming, swishing, and sloshing. However, if you hear problematic noises such as pounding, drumming, grinding, or rattling, it could be a sign of an underlying issue, and you should consider having a technician inspect your appliance.

Whether or not it’s safe to use a buzzing microwave depends on what’s causing the noise. If a loose fastener or a dirty cooling fan is the underlying issue, it’s safe to use your microwave, although you may do damage to the fan motor if you don’t clean the blades first. If the issue is stemming from something else, you could do further damage to your appliance and potentially even start a house fire if you don’t repair it before continued use. If the microwave is buzzing when not in use, shut the power and call an emergency electrician, as this could lead to a fire.

Yes, you can recycle a small appliance. In some cases, a small appliance is one of the easiest to recycle because it’s  easy to transport and is in high demand for use as scrap metal. The most common recyclable items include toasters, slow cookers, lamps and lighting, microwaves, and food processors. Charitable organizations, scrap yards and utility companies are good places to recycle your small appliance.
