"I got quotes from three different arborists, and I felt the most confident with Mark's quote. His team showed up a little early (which is totally ok), and they were FAST. Courteous crew, and did a super job with cleanup. The results met (and perhaps even exceeded) our expectations. Because of their great work, we won't need any tree work for several years, but I know I will call them again when we are ready."

"From the office staff to the arborist to the guys they snagged/falled the tree, it was all excellent. They were all professional, responsive, timely, and did a great job. The price was reasonable and they responded faster than any other tree company to our request. The arborist asked questions and explained things and we had the report in a day or two. The guys that snagged/falled the tree explained what they were going to do before starting the work. They worked great as a team ensuring everyone and everything was safe and identified exactly where the tree should come down. Great job everyone! Next time I have another job for tree work--from trimming to snagging--I'll definately hire you."

Small jobs welcome

"Neil was fantastic. He worked around our established plants to not disturb them. We had cherry Laurel tree stumps in, up on a hill. He swiftly removed them and cleaned up after. We would definitely hire him again!"

"4th time hiring American Tree Care and once again they showed up on-time, did all of the promised work - plus some - matched the estimate and was polite, courteous and very efficient. Removed a died-all-of-a-sudden tree plus another heavy-leaning tree near the telephone and power lines and then trimmed huge cedar limbs that were rubbing on the roof. In the end, there is a nice pile of shavings for the walkway, a neat stack of logs for my neighbor to have - and that's it... nothing more to clean up, nothing damaged and no surprises. Don't hire another tree service without talking to American Tree Care first - it's not too good to be true."

"These guys are truly professional tree removers. They removed a 100 foot tall double trunk birch tree from my front yard, and ground the stump. This was a big tree. This tree was in a very difficult spot to remove. It was right next to my house, and just a few feet from my main electrical line coming from the power pole. Oh, it was just a few feet from the power lines out on the street. I can't tell you how carefull they had to be to do this job without damaging my house, taking out my main line, or taking out the power to the rest of the neighborhood. They placed every limb exactly where they wanted them to fall. I highly recommend these guys for any tree service. I will use them again in the future for all my tree removal needs. They cleaned up the job site too. They blow off my roof, bushes, walkway, and driveway. They started at 8am and were done by 3pm. If you have a dangerous or difficult tree to remove, these guys can do it, and do it right.

"The crew for Just For Trees was very professional, hard working and did just what we needed. Our yard was overgrown with blackberries and Daniel’s crew still helped us get them cleaned up as it was still their off-season for tree work. They also saved my Grandmother’s magnolia tree and trimmed up the trees that were overgrown in my yard."

"I knew I needed some tree work but wanted tree experts to come review my entire, quite large and extensively-planted yard. I figured they would see things that I wasn’t aware of, that may need attention. I contacted three A-rated firms on Angie’s List. Two of the estimators are ISA-certified arborists. I decided to go with ETW for several reasons.
1) ETW schedules a full hour for Benjamin to do an estimate. He did a thorough walk-through of my yard, not just the items that I wanted him to look at. He answered all my questions patiently, thoughtfully and thoroughly. I felt he was genuinely interested in addressing the needs of my yard, and my concerns. Benjamin is an ISA-certified arborist, and prior to working as an estimator, had spent 8 years doing actual tree work.
2) Only Benjamin discovered the mushrooms growing at the base of the old, very large bigleaf maple tree in my backyard. He said this indicated rot in the trunk. He checked out the tree, showing me the rot. He said that at some point the tree would fall, but there was no way of knowing when. He gave me two options: to thin the tree to relieve weight pressure on the trunk, or to remove the tree altogether.
3) Only Benjamin told me that it was not healthy to cut back branches mid-way. This invites disease to move in to the tree. The healthiest for the tree is to remove branches at the trunk. Both the other tree services recommended cutting off branches part way, on two different trees.
4) ETW keeps all their crews employed year round, and provides benefits. I wanted to support this.
5) ETW has a great rep on Angie’s List.
All the work was completed per the contract. Graciously, ETW made an exception for me, to keep separate several pieces of wood that my father wanted to make into bowls. (ETW's arrangement with the wood hauling firm is that it gets all the wood, which is fair, since that's what makes it worth their while to get the wood, which they sell for firewood.) I was very grateful for this exception. I was home during much of the work. The crews were very nice and careful with my landscaping. There was no damage to buildings, and minor damage to surrounding plants. John who works for one of the wood haulers did a superb clean up job, and was incredibly polite.
The process did not go nearly as smoothly as I had expected. There were a lot of communication problems. I was told repeatedly by Benjamin and the crew, that the process on my job was highly unusual, and not at all representative of ETW’s typical process. Benjamin was good at communicating with me throughout the process, making an effort to get the job done on time (I had a hard deadline). The experience was a frustrating one, and not only for me. ETW offered me an additional discount to make up for all the hassles. They did not have to do this, and I commend them on this level of customer service and wanting to ensure customer satisfaction. The price noted above is the original contract price, which includes a 10% Angie's List discount - that's a good deal!
A few lessons I learned from this experience:
1. Get absolutely everything you agreed to, written out clearly in the contract. This will help to avoid misunderstandings
and miscommunication. It also helps when memory fails. :o)
2. If you have a big job, have the crew start first thing in the morning. If you get scheduled or rescheduled for an afternoon slot, refuse it and insist on an early morning slot—ideally the first job of the day. Unless you want to have the job done on multiple days.
3. Don’t expect a low-impact tree removal to not harm your plants. It doesn’t mean no-impact. Removing a huge tree in the middle of a fully landscaped yard is bound to have some impact on your landscaping.
4. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Did the company do a good job? Did they do what they said they would do? Did they listen to you? Did they make an effort to address any issues, and make things right? If yes to these, then call it a wrap and be happy.
There are a couple of unexpectedly good things that came out of hiring ETW:
1. The bigleaf maple tree was quite diseased, much more than Benjamin had thought from only seeing the outside of the trunk. So it was good that it was removed vs. potentially falling down and causing property and possibly personal injury. I feel relief, as well as gratitude to Benjamin for noticing the rot in the first place.
2. Due to ETW not quite completing the job on time, my father was present when the bottom portion of the bigleaf maple trunk was sawn apart. (The pieces he wanted were already set aside.) He saw markings in the wood that he really liked, and was able to get a couple more pieces to take home, pleasing him greatly.

Arborists questions, answered by experts

You’ll have to balance up the cost, the value of the tree (sentimental or otherwise), and the risk factors. An experienced arborist will help you understand whether transplanting is likely to be successful. The cost and hassle of transplanting a large, well-established tree are often not worth it, especially if the species is fast-growing and easy to source. The decision depends on the age and species of the tree, the conditions in the new site location, and how careful the company is when digging out and moving the tree.

Opt for a barefoot tree. Pros harvest barefoot trees when they’re dormant (leafless). They shake the dirt from the root ball and pack it in moist material.

These trees can cost half as much as the trees at your local nursery, and you can buy them online—so there’s a much wider selection. Just make sure you keep your barefoot tree cool until you’re ready to plant it.

If you aren’t sure what you’re doing, be very careful when cutting mature tree roots (roots larger than 2 inches). Root cutting and pruning can affect both a tree’s stability and its ability to nourish itself. Issues during root cutting can result in damage or injury.

It’s recommended you call in a pro to help, unless it’s a very small tree and you aren’t worried about the prospect of losing the tree.

Completely topping a plum tree is a risky business. Cut too much, and you’ll kill your tree. That said, you do need to trim the top of your tree to encourage bushy growth, maintain your tree’s vase shape, and limit size.

A plum tree's central leader (or trunk) should never extend more than 3 feet above the highest branch. When you first plant your tree, cut the central leader so it’s 2 to 3 feet tall. As it grows, cut it back 12 to 20 inches until it reaches its desired height. Never prune more than one-third of the new growth.

The shepherd’s tree, native to the Kalahari Desert in Africa, holds the record for the deepest known tree roots at over 230 feet deep. Some African communities refer to it as the “Tree of Life” since it provides food, shade, and medicinal properties to the surrounding community.
