"Jose and his crew provided us with excellent work refinishing and staining our oak hardwood floors in our 1950s home. Firstly, Jose was prompt to respond to us and setup an appointment for a quote. There was additional work around the house that his team could have tackled, and he shared his thoughts on this, but there was zero pressure to go beyond our original project scope. Jose then provided a clear written estimate via email (giving us plenty of space and time to decide) before we gave the go ahead to get started. We also felt fortunate that Jose's team was flexible to get started ASAP on our project, so our turnaround time felt lightening fast! When the work did begin, the crew showed up right on time each morning over the next three days with Jose present to communicate with us. The team was also respectful of COVID protocol and to my fiance and myself (plus our pets!) being WFH while they were working in the home. We felt informed during the entire process, that all next steps were clear, and that we were working with a top-notch, professional team. Once the work was complete, the final price came right to what was estimated. And of course, our floors look wonderful! Everyone has been impressed with the transformation and we absolutely would work with Otto's Hardwood Flooring again for future projects."

"Vasiliy did a good job on refinishing my old original hardwood floors from the 1940s. It previously had stains, dents and irregularities. After Vasiliy’s crew refinished the floors, it looked great and you could not tell there were irregularities. They were on time, professional and paid attention to detail. After the job I told Vasiliy that a piece of wood wasn’t replaced when they said they would. He made sure to come back and finish that job. I would recommend them again for sure."

"We had Goss Flooring refinish existing hardwood floors and install new hardwood flooring in our TV Room to match existing floor. Goss Flooring did an excellent job matching existing floor and finishing to match. They started and finished on time and left the house clean. Highly recommend this company."

"Rick and Candice were a pleasure to work with, they were professional, prompt, and did a fantastic job. My floors were in pretty rough shape and my tile flooring installer said it was a little beyond his capabilities. He referred me to Sterling and said they were the best around the Kitsap Washington area. I called them and received a quote which I thought was very reasonable for the work that needed to be done. Rick performed wood patching and matching to my existing floors. He then took everything down to bare wood, refinished and varnished the entire floor. The end result was amazing and I was very happy. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing hardwood flooring services."

"Eric Kragerud and his PacWest team did an exceptional job on the flooring in our home. They added and replaced all of the hardwood flooring on the main floor, replaced the treads on our main staircase with hardwoods, and re-carpeted the upstairs of our home as well. Eric also coordinated the installation of new quartz countertops and accent stone in our kitchen, all of which turned out beautifully. Everything was completed using highest quality materials, excellent craftsmanship, and best of all on-time. Highly recommend."

Hardwood Flooring questions, answered by experts

Raising a sunken living room requires help from a professional contractor. The expert will remove existing flooring and trim, reroute utility lines with respect to the new floor level, pour concrete to fill the recessed space, and then let the concrete cure. After the foundation is raised up, the contractor will install the new utility lines, repaint the walls, if necessary, and finish the area with flooring and trim.

With proper care and maintenance, hardwood floors can last for decades or even centuries. Solid hardwood and tropical wood, in particular, have the potential to be sanded and refinished multiple times, extending their lifespan. However, the longevity of hardwood floors also depends on factors such as the wood species, quality of installation, and the level of foot traffic in that area of your home.

Without walls, other options to quiet an open space are to add noise-dampening materials like rugs, carpets, curtains, and soft furniture. These can act as a barrier to block and absorb sound. More expensive alternatives include acoustic panels, room dividers and temporary walls, and more advanced soundproofing.

Yes, you can negotiate the purchase price of new carpet. You may also be able to negotiate installation costs or other fees in addition to the per-foot pricing of the carpet itself. You may have better luck negotiating with an independent retailer (as opposed to a big-box store), as they may have more discretion in pricing, but it’s always worth asking.

Yes, carpeted stairs are generally considered safer than stairs with hard surfaces like wood, vinyl, or tile. Carpet provides more traction and friction, which helps reduce the chances of slips and falls. Additionally, if a fall does occur, carpet offers more cushioning, which can lessen the severity of an injury. While hard surfaces can look great, they are often more slippery. However, it's worth noting that some carpets, especially if they are new, dirty, or have a slick texture, can also pose a slipping hazard. To improve safety on any type of stair surface, you can add traction treads to increase grip.
