"June 25th, 2018 In the spring of 2017, we set about finding a contractor to renovate our dated, non-functional kitchen. It seemed simple enough: go to a home expo, talk to seven or eight of them, invite three over to meet and choose the best one. I could not have been more mistaken. After talking to no less than eight contractors/firms, we’d seen it all: simple replacement of the existing kitchen footprint (with no effort whatsoever put into making it more functional), price gouging and the designer having their assistant throw together our design minutes before we arrived for a design review meeting and forgetting to include a few minor details - like the entire island. Of course, there was the time honored designer that never called back. Luckily, and nearing the end of our rope, we were referred to Jeff Thompson at Waterstone Kitchen & Bath by a friend. Jeff set an interactive and detail-oriented tone from our first meeting. He put great thought into making our space more functional and better suited to our taste. Always on top of returning communications and exactly where the discussion was, we arrived at a breathtaking design after a very pleasant couple of meetings. Looking a the prospect of getting a full sized island into our space, which other firms assured us was impossible, we set about calling Jeff’s references. Each and every one of the ten calls were unconditionally resounding endorsements. Upon deciding to sign up with Waterstone Kitchen & Bath for the project, we began the process of selecting materials and colors. Jeff’s designer Deanna was incredibly enthusiastic and fun to work with - even making it a pleasant endeavor to walk through warehouses full of kitchen countertop slabs in the early summer heat. No detail at all escaped Deanna’s attention - and it truly showed in the final result. As we went through the process of the actual build, we were blown away by the timeliness, friendless, trustworthiness and cleanliness of Jeff’s crew. Jeff’s project manager Jake was always on top of every detail. He was also endlessly patient with us in wading through our many questions and even a few small changes we asked for along the way (which they always accommodated). Jeff was always available to discuss anything at all that was on our minds. From a timing and budget perspective, our project ran on rails! Budget allocations, per our choices, were clearly laid out at the beginning and, as we requested changes along the way, they were methodically tracked and accounted for throughout. There we no surprises, gotchas or uncomfortable moments whatsoever. Our project finished on time and unquestionably exceeded the very high expectations that both Waterstone Kitchen & Bath’s reputation and Jeff’s design had set. We truly could not be happier. Our beautiful new kitchen is the focal point of our home, has modernized our space, is incredibly functional and is wonderful for entertaining guests and holding large get-togethers. Since completion of our project, we have referred our neighbors to Jeff. They just finished their kitchen and could not be happier with the results. Waterstone Kitchen & Bath is also about to do a powder room for us and, once we are ready, we will have them renovate our master bathroom and bedroom. There can be no higher endorsement than repeat business and the referral of a friend and neighbor. If you are in the market for a renovation, please do yourself a favor and make sure that you meet with Jeff and his team at Waterstone Kitchen & Bath. You will not regret it."

"Steve and his crew -- Shawn and Bruce -- did an exceptional job remodeling my kitchen. I had my original 1994 oak cabinets and builder-grade floor/countertops/sink replaced with quartz counters and porcelain tile floor and the cabinets were refaced with new color and doors. I am very happy with the quality of the work and how the remodel changed the entire look of my kitchen. The crew was very professional and meticulous in finishing all work."

"GBC Alexandria renovated my master bathroom. Fabian, the designer, patiently worked with me to realize my vision to enlarge the shower, increase storage, replace the soaking tub and to create a spa like feeling – while working within the limitations of a condo. Pretty much a full gut of the room. The crew that did the work, Omar and Wilmer did an excellent job and were very meticulous – clearly taking pride in their work. The project manager Selim quickly addressed any concerns I had throughout the process, and kept me informed throughout. The transformation to my master bathroom is amazing! I am very pleased with the outcome."

"We was getting estimates for our bath room remodeling. Harlan came to give us free estimate and introduced us new shower wall system. This wall system prevents shower wall inside from getting molds and bacteria. It also has a variety of panel design choices . Harlan presented to us with four different options based on our preferences and budget. We were able to pick one easily and are very excited to get it started."

"Scope of work in our house built in 1950’s with low ceilings and small spaces: Gut and rebuild our kitchen and two bathrooms including the Master Bath. In addition, taking down a wall between our kitchen and the dining room (to create peninsula), removing a door between kitchen and the outside patio, and bricking to close this space., installing new window in the kitchen. Comments: We discussed with several contractors our project and after thorough consideration we decided to work with DMV of Gaithersburg, Maryland. The selling point for us to select DMV was a feeling of not being pressured to sign, being truly in charge of this project (not perceived when discussing with others) AND their flexibility in the design concept. We were not disappointed with our decision. Particularly, their flexibility meant that we could make changes "on the fly" if not satisfied or had new ideas. Importantly, unless those changes meant additional costs in materials or a significant change from the scope of work, there were no additional costs of labor to make these adjustments. As an example, we changed the color of paint three times in one bathroom (after painting was completed) to get the look we wanted. No problem and no additional cost to do this! Anyone who has renovated a kitchen or bath will likely tell you that no matter how much planning you do ahead of time, it cannot fully prepare you for what the finished product in your home will look like. DMV understands this and both their patience and flexibility with the homeowner is truly commendable. They also work closely with the glass company and custom-made great looking shower cabin in one of our bathrooms and a beautiful glass panel cover for the window inside the second shower cabin. Something we’ve been told by several other companies was not possible to execute. The end-products are not only beautiful, allowing daylight in our small bathrooms (which otherwise would be dependent on electric light only), but are also very functional. It's clear, DMV knows its craft well. We were provided a detailed timeline of the entire project. This was very helpful in understanding the timing of events for planning purposes. The schedule was reasonably followed although there were occasional delays due to timing of materials being delivered or having to wait for a damaged material to be replaced by the manufacturer (at no additional cost to us). Working team was always on time, polite, working hard, clean, and conscientious of us living in our home during the renovation. Javier, Jacinto and the rest of the team were wonderful to work with. DMV used only company employees and no contractors. We absolutely love our new kitchen and both bathrooms! Thank you, DMV! If we were to renovate again, DMV would be our first choice."

"I'm an absentee landlord. The tenant called and said water was leaking from around the chandler in the living room. I hired Bledar and crew based on a recommendation from a realitor. Turns out the plumbing behind the bathtub on an upper floor had corroded. My house is in Old Town Alexandria and has a lot of deferred maintenance. Bledar come over the next day and removed part of the living room ceiling and walls in the bath. It was pretty bad. He recommend a full renovation. He worked with the tentant and together they visited various stores to pick out tile, fixtures ... It turned out great!!! So good that I immediately hired him to renovate a 2nd bath which was also leaking and an adjoining area. Again he went with the tenant and handled all of the details. I can't recommend Bledar enough! Spectacular work, friendly, fast, diligent and very reasonably priced (I had 2 other contractors price the work). He cleaned up everything after each demo and handled all of the details involved with a complete bath remodel down to the studs - including new sub flooring in one of the bath. Couldn't be happier with Bledar and his crew's (including his brother) work ethic and results! By the way - I have never met Bledar, I live in CA."

Bathtub Replacement questions, answered by experts

You should consider replacing your bathtub if the tub—or any potential refinishing—is older than about 20 years old. However, acrylic and fiberglass bathtubs have a shorter lifespan (about 10 to 15 years). You may decide to replace your bathtub sooner if there are stains or mold you can’t get rid of, no matter how much you clean it, or if you find leaks and cracks that could lead to costly water damage.

It is possible to install a two-in-one unit that has both a shower and a walk-in tub so you can still have both in smaller bathrooms or provide a showerhead for those in the household who prefer taking showers. You’ll hear these referred to as walk-in tub and shower combo units. Keep in mind that these combo units can take up more space than a standard shower or tub, and you’ll most likely need to hire a pro to install one.

The time it takes to install a bathtub depends on the type of tub, the condition of the existing plumbing, and the installation's complexity. A new bathtub can be installed in four to eight hours. However, this can take longer if any additional plumbing work or bathroom modifications are needed.

Whether replacing a bathtub with a shower affects your home's value depends on several factors, with the most significant being whether it's the only tub in the house. Removing the sole bathtub can lower a home's value because many prospective buyers, particularly families with young children or pets, require at least one.

However, a tub-to-shower conversion can also increase home value. A modern walk-in shower is often seen as an upgrade in a secondary bathroom and can be a desirable feature for its accessibility and style, appealing to older homebuyers or those without children. The overall impact is also influenced by your local real estate market and its typical buyer demographic.

If your bathroom layout allows, installing both a freestanding bathtub and a separate shower can be an ideal solution that appeals to the widest range of potential buyers.

Acrylic tubs are extremely durable and rarely chip or crack. Even when frequently used, tubs made with this material are largely resistant to damage. However, damage may occur as the tub ages. They can also crack from damage from heavy objects and cleaners or a lack of support.
