"I needed to replace an old townhouse roof damaged by high winds. My experience with Roofing & More from my first contact with Marie was outstanding. Dwayne came a few days later and provided an estimate, complete explanation of roofing options and company polices, the insurance, license, pamphlets and documents. He also had a crew come out, the next morning, to put up some tarps. Angie keep me completely up-to-date on the project and scheduling, I was never left in the dark wondering about what was happening. Rob, Operations Manager, came out for a pre-construction meeting to explain exactly what and how the crew would perform the replacement, safety methods, home protection, cleanup and photo documentation during construction. On the day the work was performed the amazing hard working crew, led by Armando, worked as prescission drill team, continuously non-stop. They completely cleaned up all material that floated onto my neighbors areas. I did not find any debris that was overlooked. I was so impressed with Roofing & More that I have other projects for them."

"Rich was amazing. This job was very difficult. Because of the configuration of my house, there was only one spot in the closet where the tube would go thru. Another contractor told me that the job was impossible, because of obstables both between closet floor and dining room ceiling and closet ceiling and roof. Rich managed to install the Solatube and avoid all the obstacles. It was really amazing what he was able to do. I am not easily impressed with contractors, but Rich was great. He is clearly an expert in his trade."

"I had received a recommendation from a friend re: Griffin Roofing, so I included them among the three contractors I contacted for estimates. From the start I was impressed by the professionalism and no-nonsense approach of Matt Hoffman, the individual who came to inspect my roof and provide an estimate. My existing roof was 20 years old and the plywood sheathing was damaged by moisture intrusion in several areas (visible from the attic). Unlike one of the other contractors, who tried to "sell" me by starting at $30,000 "but if you sign today we can do it for $20,000," Matt was very low key and matter of fact. He pointed out some of the visible issues on the roof and advised me of potential issues once they exposed the plywood sheathing. He provided best case and worst case estimates so there would be no surprises if they had to replace the plywood sheathing. He explained the work schedule and everything that would be included in the price (flashing, debris removal, plywood cost). Matt sent us a link to review the type of shingles and color. Since he impressed us with his professionalism, we trusted his judgement and asked for his recommendation on the shingles. We are extremely pleased with the final result! Matt's crew arrived on schedule and the foreman introduced himself and his crew. They appeared to work almost non-stop in the high July heat and cleaned up all debris before they left each day (we had much of the sheathing replaced, so it was a multi-day job). We were so impressed at the quality of their workmanship in spite of the conditions. Matt kept in contact during the job and after completion. He promptly sent the invoice - there were no surprises, of course - and we were able to pay online via credit card. All in all, we had a great experience with this company and their employees!"

"Mr. Burns is quite knowledgeable about the type of roof we had (built-up, also known as slag or tar & gravel), and the repairs necessary to correct a leak (vice replacement). Other roofers wouldnâ t take the job - it was out of their sphere of experience. Mr. Burns was prompt, clean and efficient, and charged a reasonable amount. On his first visit, Mr. Burns repaired part of the roof and eave that had rotted away over time. The rot was due to long term (years) water intrusion. There were two possible sources for the origin, but we took his advice to wait for rain to determine which area needed repair work. He returned in a few days, after a heavy rainstorm revealed the source, to find and repair the source of the leak higher up. The roof has been trouble free since his repair."

"Ray and MRG was excellent to work with. Ray explained all our options for roofing, was prompt and concise with communication, and checked on progress daily. The crew arrived promptly and worked hard leaving the job site tidy each evening. The final roof project looks great and Iâ  m glad I went with Rayâ  s recommendation for color. The only thing the crew could have taken more care with was covering shrubs with tarps. I would recommend MRG for any roofing and gutter project."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Furring strips (also called wood stripping) are not always necessary for a metal roof installation, but they are highly recommended and may be required by local building codes or the roofing manufacturer's specifications. There are several key reasons to use them:

  • Energy Efficiency: Furring strips, made of wood or metal, create an air gap between the metal panels and the roof deck. This acts as a thermal break, reducing heat transfer into your home and improving overall energy efficiency.

  • Moisture and Condensation Control: The air gap allows for better airflow, which helps prevent moisture buildup and condensation under the metal panels.

  • Structural Support: They provide a solid, even frame to which you can attach the metal roofing panels.

It is especially important to use furring strips when installing a metal roof over existing shingles. Without them, the roof surface can be uneven, and you will experience greater solar heat gain.

While the terms are often used interchangeably, wood shakes and wood shingles have notable differences, primarily in their manufacturing and appearance. Wood shingles are machine-cut on both sides, resulting in a smooth, thin, and uniform product. In contrast, wood shakes are typically hand-split or sawed on only one side, giving them a more textured, natural, and rustic appearance. Due to these manufacturing differences, shakes are generally thicker, heavier, and less uniform than shingles. They are also more expensive. Homeowners seeking a more rustic aesthetic often choose shakes, while those preferring a more uniform look may opt for shingles. Both are installed in an overlapping pattern to create a durable, weather-resistant roof.

Fall is widely considered the best time of year to replace a roof. The moderate temperatures are ideal for roofing crews to work and for new shingles to seal properly. Additionally, autumn weather is often drier, reducing the risk of weather-related delays compared to the rainier spring season.

While spring is also a viable option, the higher chance of rainfall can slow down the project. The main drawback to a fall installation is that it's the peak season for roofers, which can lead to higher prices and scheduling challenges.

To potentially save money, you could consider scheduling your roof replacement during the summer or winter off-seasons. However, both seasons have significant disadvantages. Extreme summer heat can make shingles too soft to handle, while winter's cold, snow, and ice can create dangerous working conditions and prevent shingles from sealing correctly, as they typically require temperatures above 40-45°F.

Look for certified local roofing contractors with plenty of experience working with cedar. There are also several important roofing questions to ask before choosing a roofer, including whether they are licensed, bonded, and insured. Once you’ve rounded up a few good candidates, compare estimates and hire whoever gives you the best bang for your buck.

Technically speaking, yes, verbal agreements and “handshake deals” can be legally binding contracts that will hold up in court, but the suing party will need to be able to prove that the parties entered into the contract. Even though verbal and handshake deals can be binding, it’s risky to rely on these types of agreements for anything, including roofing projects. Always aim to get your contract in writing, and make sure it includes all terms and that you don’t agree to additional terms that don’t appear in the contract.
