"Bacon took the time to first evaluate the whole situation to make accurate recommendations to us for the work to be performed. Their work was done very carefully and with great care. The final result… everything is perfectly working again, and the job site was left nicely cleaned. They will always be my first call for issues around the house!"

If you're getting your home ready to sell, or you just bought a home, chances are you have a punch list of things you want to get done. From simple upgrades, to home enhancements, to those tasks in your home you simply never think about, we have you covered. We will reduce the stress of nagging repairs and tasks.

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

The DOE is phasing out AC units with SEER ratings that fall below 14 or 15. The exact minimum rating depends on your region. In the northern United States, new ACs must have a minimum SEER rating of 14, though you can still buy and install older systems as long as they were compliant when they were manufactured. In the southern and southwestern United States, you cannot buy or install older air conditioners with lower SEER ratings. The minimum rating is between 14.5 and 15, depending on the power of the unit.

If your home has an existing forced-air heat system, you can add a central air conditioner to it. An HVAC technician can retrofit your forced-air heating system by installing an evaporator coil onto the furnace plenum, the box next to the furnace that draws in air. Once installed, the air conditioning coils use the furnace’s blower to circulate the air.

The best way to reduce heat upstairs is to release it by opening a window. Hot air rises, and if you can create some airflow by opening a window upstairs and also one on a lower level, the hot air should be pushed out of the home. Remember that fans pointing out the window do a much better job of circulating air than fans pointing into the home.

There are ways to detect a refrigerant leak with several different testing methods. However, most homeowners can figure out something’s wrong with their AC unit by noticing these common signs:

  • Ice forming on the evaporator coil

  • Water leaks near the AC unit

  • Frequent hissing sounds

  • Increased electric bills

  • Unit takes longer than usual to cool

  • Unit is blowing hot air

Repairing an AC unit is usually more cost-effective than replacing it, but you should consider the age of your system. Most central AC units last around 15 years, and window units last for between eight and 10 years. If your central AC is more than 10 years old or your window AC is over six years old, you should consider replacing the AC unit rather than repairing it. The repair will fix your issue, but you’ll likely save money in the long run by replacing it rather than repairing it only to replace it a few years later.
