They showed up when they said they would.
Plumber arrived at appointed time. He efficiently removed the rusted pipe and installed a new trap. I asked him if he would be able to remove a toilet in another bathroom. He called his office and they gave him the ok. The toilet was original to the house (1954). It was a difficult job and Mr. Bailey was very careful not to break anything in the floor. I am very pleased that he was willing to do this extra work for me.
On Monday he arrived at 8:30 AM. He replaced the gas valve and said a thermocoupler needed to be replaced also. It has a metal piece and he showed me that it was burnt. He had a price book and told me that replacement of the thermocoupler would be $150. I told him to call the shop because this price was unreasonable since the part is small, takes 10 minutes to install and he is already at the house. The part looks like something that could be purchased at Home Depot for $25. The shop manager told him to sell it for $36. Do not be afraid to question the cost. Also, sometimes there is a slight noise now but I have not determined it I will ask the technician to return to check the noise.. The technician has been with the company for two months. The house is warm again. I checked with a friend about the cost for the gas valve and he felt that the price from John C Flood was reasonable because the part is an electronic part and they add two hours for installation. The installation took about 2 hours.
Not sure why the title is John C Flood of VA because the technician said he came from Hyattsville.
"I would like to thank “Angies List” for the opportunity to resolve a complaint. Yes! We would and will make every endeaver to solve this fairly and to the satisfaction of both parties. To that point, it is our belief that a melding of both parties beliefs into one story that can be useful when attempting to assign blame and or costs and also give the folks at “Angies List” a better insite as to the hearts of both customer and contractor. You have provided us with the customers side now here is ours. We were asked, by [member name removed] to come to him home because he already has a problem with his AC. Upon arrival we found an attic system that was not functioning. Some testing found the circuit board was bad. As is our policy the mechanic called the office with his diagnosis which serves as a second opinion and has helped us better serves our customers. There was no signs of recent water in the emergency pan or anywhere else. However the ceiling below was staining and somewhat bowed but from the attic no moisture was detectable. A diagnosis of bad control board was given and replacement costs were discussed and agreed to. A $159.00 deposit was accepted and a new board was ordered. Two days later we returned and installed the new board. The customers says in his letter to “Angies List” that “at this point I had water breading in the ceiling and obvious staining in some places.” The AC system wasn’t even working! We had the new circuit board in our hand! A unit not working creates no water! We were going there during a very wet spell of weather. We suspected possible roof problems or maybe plumbing but not the AC system. Definitly the beginnings of mold problems are all from circumstances form prior to our initial visit – thru that day. The board was installed and the unit made operational. The air was cold and the unit was condensing and that condensation was running off. We explained this to our customer and collected our fee. According to the customers own words the system worked properly for a couple of days before they went on their 3day camping trip! It was while they were away that according to the customer, another HVAC contractor told them that he had a condensate stoppage, which backed up the water and its weight eventually brought down a ceiling. These circumstances did not exist when we were there, and could have occurred at any time. The system didn’t back up for at least 2 or more days after we fixed it. While we feel awful about this series of events, we feel it is hardly fair to have us pay for mold remedation, ceiling repairs, or insurance deductables. We would offer to pay all labor for us to repair the system problem (IE. New circuit board and blower motor). Customer to pay only for parts at our cost. Also we would be happy to provide a free estimate to handle defects in original installation."
