"Ouch, that hurts, We're really sorry there has been some confusion. We did run your service call on Thursday Febuary 28, 2019 from 10:25am-11:15am, an invoice was sent and remains outstanding. Communication has really been a struggle in this case, unfortunately we don't often communicate with the deaf community, maybe 1-2 times a year. I am not sure if there was something on our end, where we failed to communicate correctly but we did our best with every known option. This was a special case and we attempted to communicate through the Video Relay Service (VRS) for the Deaf. We actually tried to call 4 diferent times and left messages each time through this service. We attempted to communicate through email as well which bounced back as undeliverable from the email address provided. All our calls are recorded so we are pretty sure we entered the correct email given. As said earlier, we did run the call, because there was no one at home, the house was vacant, a combination lockbox was left for us to use. This also made communication an additional struggle, which we tried several times, in different ways. We have taken pictures of your equipment dated and timed of the day when service was performed. Actually the security alarm went off and our service technician was able to disarm the alarm with the instructions given. We emailed notes and an invoice for the service which remains outstanding of $159.00 but bounced back as a failed to deliver. As you can see, we have won the Angies List service of the year award many times and have outstanding reviews. We work hard to serve our customers in the best possible way. We, as a small family business have been thriving since 1975."
The next day the technician, Russ, gave me a heads-up call that I asked for to leave work in time. He met me at our house around the time we expected him. After taking a rather quick look, he determined there to be a coolant leak and quickly quoted a repair cost of $1,800-$2,000, including several hours of labor to possible have to weld a fix and 7 lbs of R-22 coolant at $100/lb. This appeared very vague and as opposed to a more detailed second opinion we received from a reputable competitor the following day (quoted at ~$800), Russ did not detail the work for the fix. In fact he did not fully point out the root cause of the issue or the actual fix and concentrated on the symptoms (leaked oil at the bottom of the unit) instead. His assessment was not incorrect in the end but the high repair quote was not seemingly based on anything concrete.
The conversation quickly moved to a replacement of the unit as well as the condenser coils. I was informed this job could be done within ten days and would be in the $5,000 ballpark for a comparable 3-ton SEER13 or 14 unit. Again, this seemed to be a relatively quick and off the cuff estimate to me. He charged $114 for this service call. While that doesn't seem out of line, it's more than the second opinion cost us.
Russ informed me that he would get a proposal back to me that evening. I understand the technicians worked very long hours at the time, so hearing back quickly was appreciated. However, that proposal never arrived. When I called Rowan the next morning, I was informed Russ did indeed work past 9pm but would get in touch with me that day to talk about the proposal. I politely asked for the proposal to include a listing of both labor and parts and was told Rowan did not commonly provide such line items. Surprised at this response, I asked how that would enable me to compare labor and product with competitors and received the same answer as before.
Russ never did get in touch with me that day either. I called back once more in the afternoon and have still not heard anything. A week has since passed and still no word. It surprises me that only Russ could have put forth a proposal. He took measurements and must have had an idea of what parts to quote. Why not hand off that information to the office? Why hinge your sales business on your technicians that are out in the field performing services all day long? I have since gotten other estimates and have had a quality system installed at a lower price with a higher SEER rating and from a very reputable competitor in the area.
I am disappointed in Rowan's customer service. I originally contacted the company based on the overwhelming amount of positive feedback, and I can chalk this experience up to this being a very busy and very hot time of year. Things get lost, priorities shift, etc., but at the end of the day, I was still never contacted about a proposal and therefore would have never received an installation. It bewilders me how a company would seemingly not pursue a sale.
Another point I want to touch on is deliberately listed at the bottom as I don't want my feedback to be discounted by either Rowan or other members due to personal opinion. Please consider this a note aside from above chronological facts:
Throughout my interactions with Rowan, I never felt good except for the initial contact. Russ' demeanor, while overall polite, did not help me establish a customer/salesperson relationship with him, and I would not have been as comfortable making a purchase from Rowan. When I am referred to as "my friend", as Russ did, I pay close attention as experience has taught me that I may be getting a bad deal. Terms like "buddy", "pal", or "my friend" raise flags with me, and as a somewhat ignorant customer in the dealings of HVAC, I worry about being taken advantage of. It's got a bit of a "used car salesman" attitude. This may very well just be my personal attitude and, again, this is meant as a side note, not the substance of my overall feedback.
In contrast, the reputable company I did purchase our system from dealt with me very professionally, addressed me as "sir" (this is coming from a VP of the organization several years my senior) and made me feel comfortable about the purchase and timelines. This is how you sell and build relationships.
About 2 years ago, Rowan Heating and Cooling was part of the team that did a complete overhaul to my DC rowhouse. As part of that process, Rowan zoned my heating a cooling systems and rerouted ducts to better serve all the floors my home. They were flexible with their time in order to accommodate my general contractor's schedule. My heating and cooling bills have dropped by yet another 10% and all floors of my house are now temperate. (Anyone who has ever lived in a DC rowhouse knows how hard it is to keep all floors of such houses temperate at the same time!)
I cannot say enough good things about this company. Jim Rowan is extremely knowledgeable and his wife, Theresa, who runs their office, is very helpful. Nick Rowan is following his father's footsteps and provides excellent service, as does the crew who works under him. As a company, they are prompt, courteous, competent and stand by their good work. I highly recommend them!
Please note that I am purposely not indicating a price for this work. Rowan Heaing and Cooling will quote you a fair price for the job they will do and will stand by their work.
