"Trim took two days and Carpenter was professional and the work was good. The painters were efficient and professional. Their attention to detail was amazing and looked great. They painted areas I didn’t expect to be painted, just to make it look better."

"I had Paul doing the work. He did work that was just phenomenal. I had a large mirror that had been removed from a bathroom that was glued leaving a ridge on the wall. Paul was able to scrape off the remaining glue ridge left by the people who removed the mirror. He re-textured wall all the way so you can't ever tell it was there. Then he painted over it. Just spectacular. He is extremely careful to tape off all desired locations as well to not over paint. I'd recommend Paul to anybody. He's honest, cleans up right afterward, incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Paul will be my only handyman. The pricing was extremely fair."

Architects questions, answered by experts

Typically, architects do not build homes in a hands-on sense of doing the actual framing, roofing, or other building. Architects usually do not have the training and experience to build the homes they design. An architect would need to know how to do the specific trades required to build a house, which is possible but not a common practice. A general contractor or homebuilder typically oversees the actual details of building the house that the architect designs.

While classic Palm Springs architecture in the Palm Springs area will naturally cost more due to the high cost of living, prices across the rest of the country will vary. Remember that older homes, including those built before 1970, will cost more to renovate due to updated building codes—something to keep in mind when considering the upfront cost of the house.

The most idyllic building material that encapsulates the feel of Federal architecture is a brick facade, often with bricks alternating between long side and short side. Palladium and arched transom windows are also prevalent, as are flat, white window lintels. More ornate Federal architecture buildings also include columns on either side of the front door. More important than most of the finer details, though, is the symmetry from the exterior. On the interior, ornate plaster moldings and plaster ceiling medallions are indicative of the style.

Blueprints are generally available for houses built after the early 1900s. Before then, detailed building schematics like blueprints were rarely used and even more rarely saved. If you have an older house and need blueprints, you can have a new set drawn up by an architect or draftsperson.

Greek Revival and Federal architecture are quite similar in that they focus on symmetry and a blend of utilitarianism and opulence, but they differ in a few key areas. First, Federal architecture tends to include a brick facade, whereas Greek Revival homes more often have stucco siding, much like you’d find in Mediterranean houses. Greek Revival homes also tend to be a bit more ornate, with columns as decor, and more decorative and formal porticos.
