"Third time we’ve used Eric, owner of Distinguished Designs. Previous jobs were a laundry room remodel and the addition of a detached outdoor patio with roof. This time it was a beach house remodel in Galveston. We’ve found that Eric has very good attention detail, used highly skilled crews, and is very knowledgeable in all aspects of construction. Feeling comfortable with Eric’s abilities, what started as an “add another bathroom” job turned into a complete remodel. We are very happy with the end product and would not hesitate to use Eric again. Many of our neighbors have seen the finished remodel and requested Eric’s contact information. I highly recommend Eric."

"Back in November 2024, my husband and I discussed remodeling the kitchen to something brighter and more spacious. The brown cabinets made the kitchen look dark and dreary. After meeting with several contractors, we hired Tell Projects. We met with Adrianna who listened to our vision for the remodel, listened to our concerns and provided us with their credentials. She set out to design what the kitchen could look like. Once we received the estimate and signed the contract we set a start date. We were given a 3–4-week time frame, allowing for anything unexpected (like snowstorm Enzo on January 21 and 22). Project started January 2, 2025, with the demo, and was completed on January 27, 2025, with touch up painting and walk through. We could not be happier with the results. The pictures do not do justice to what our kitchen now looks like, All the workers were courteous, friendly and professional. Some of the workers even offered suggestions on how to make the design more user friendly and complimentary. They left the site clean every time they worked on it. We would like to acknowledge all the staff that made our dream kitchen come to life. Project managers Zach and Maikel. "My master bathroom was completely gutted and remodeled by John. He added a second sink, fabricated and installed my custom quartz vanity top, toilet, vanity, lots of custom tile work and increased our shower to a large walk in. Everything went great and the work was finished on time. John shows up on time every day and even puts in extra time on weekends to keep project on time."

Kitchen and Bathroom Remodel questions, answered by experts

While a custom shower costs more and is trickier to install than a prefabricated type, tailoring the layout is particularly useful in small bathrooms with limited space and offers complete design freedom. You can build a shower bench for a family member with limited mobility or a shower niche (built-in, ingressed shelves) to hold clutter and act as a focal point.

The general rule of thumb regarding how much to spend on remodeling your home is not to exceed 30% of the value of your property for the remodel budget. For example, if your house is worth $350,000, the 30% rule suggests that you shouldn’t spend more than $105,000 on the remodel.

Yes, you can tile over existing tiles in a bathroom, but it is not always recommended. For this method to be successful, the original tile surface must be clean, flat, and free of damage such as cracks, unevenness, mold, or mildew. While tiling over existing tiles can save time and money, there are potential drawbacks. The new adhesive may not bond properly, and the process adds extra weight to the wall or floor. Additionally, the increased height of the surface could interfere with door clearances. For the best and most durable results, removing the old tiles before installing new ones is generally the better option.

There are several ways to save money on a bathroom remodel through proper planning and savvy design strategies. To reduce costs, consider the following:

  • Purchase your own materials: Buy your own bathroom fixtures, hardware, and other materials to avoid contractor upcharges and delivery fees.

  • Shop smart for big-ticket items: Save on pricey items like tiles and tubs by shopping sales and at discount stores.

  • Avoid major layout changes: Keep plumbing in its current location. Opt to replace fixtures rather than moving them to avoid significant renovation work.

  • Focus on high-impact, low-cost updates: Make affordable but impactful smaller changes, such as upgrading hardware, installing new lighting, and adding stylish but economical accessories.

  • DIY where possible: Handle easier parts of the remodel yourself, like painting or installing light fixtures, to save on labor costs.

  • Time your remodel strategically: Consider remodeling in the spring, which tends to be a lower-demand time of year and may result in lower costs.

Most codes require 15 inches on either side of the toilet's centerline (from the wall or vanity) and at least 21 to 24 inches between the toilet and the wall in front of it. These codes ensure that your toilet is easy to use and access, even in small bathrooms. Check your local building codes for the exact measurements required.
