"We did not know what we needed; all we knew was the bathroom light was tripping the GFI and that an outside power outlet was not getting any power at all. Brad G and his partner Nick were extremely punctual (I was on a standby list); came professionally dressed and ready to diagnose and fix our issues. Very quickly they identified that the bathroom GFI was wrongly wired but was ready for replacement. They immediately identified the switch controlling the outside power outlet was burned and offered alternative solutions than simply replacing it based on how we are using the outlet. With the coupons from Angie's list; these two repairs were a lot less than we expected. Brad and Nick were extremely courteous, tidied up after themselves and explained what was going on with each issue. We highly recommend them and would definitely hire again for future electrical issues."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Smart light switches are designed to work with most traditional light fixtures and wiring. However, there are several compatibility factors to consider. Some smart switches require a neutral wire to function, which may not be present in older homes (typically built before 1985). If you plan to use a dimming feature, ensure your LED bulbs are specifically the dimmable type. Additionally, a stable Wi-Fi connection is necessary for remote control, though some models may use other standards like ZigBee, which would require a compatible smart home hub.

The copper wire used in knob and tube wiring systems can last up to 100 years. However, it’s considered a dangerous and outdated wiring method because the cloth, fabric, or rubber insulation sheathing can become brittle and fall apart. Knob and tube wiring systems should be inspected if you’re considering buying a home with this type of wiring, or if you have problems with frequently tripping breakers, a sign that you may need to replace them.

The color of your cable will help you to identify its function. In the U.S., the National Electrical Code (NEC) designates the color code for electrical cables. “Hot” cables are black, red, and blue. In cases of higher voltage lines, orange might also be used to indicate a hot cable. White or gray indicates a neutral, and green or green with a yellow stripe indicates a ground.

Yes—if a breaker is old or damaged, it might not be able to detect power surges or electrical overload. If that happens, the breaker won’t trip. Instead, it will begin to overheat, putting your electrical system at risk of fire or total electrical failure. Circuit breakers don’t last forever, so you can proactively replace old or damaged breakers before they stop working.

It's less expensive to run power overhead because it doesn’t require excavation, and the power cables are less costly. However, underground electric service is better protected from weather and general wear and tear, so it’s less likely to get damaged. When determining which way to run power, consult a local electrician to get an expect opinion.
