Electrical questions, answered by experts

Moving an electrical meter in your home depends on what your electric utility company allows. If you only want to move it a few inches, that may be no problem or only incur light fees. If you want to move it a significant distance, you may need to arrange a utility inspection and get permission, or your utility company may prevent it altogether.

If you’re wondering whether an electrical panel in the bathroom needs to be moved, the answer is yes. Due to the risks of shocks and electrical fires, electrical panels cannot be located in bathrooms per National Electric Code Volume 70. Additionally, gasses, vapors, liquids, and temperature fluctuations can all compromise the functionality of your electrical panel, so it’s important to install it in a dry, cool, safe, and easily accessible location.

Circuit breakers can wear out, but it takes a long time. Circuit breakers typically last several decades if they don’t face problems like floods or frequent lightning storms. Worn-out circuit breakers may trip more frequently as time passes. However, they can also stop tripping altogether, which leads to electrical dangers. If your breakers have passed the 30-year mark, it’s time to consider an inspection.

Yes. A pellet stove should have its own 110V outlet and dedicated circuit breaker. Otherwise, it could overload the system. Pellet stoves can create major fire hazards if they aren’t wired properly or have to share circuits. Get in touch with a local electrician or pellet stove expert if you need to run new wiring for a pellet stove.

The copper wire used in knob and tube wiring systems can last up to 100 years. However, it’s considered a dangerous and outdated wiring method because the cloth, fabric, or rubber insulation sheathing can become brittle and fall apart. Knob and tube wiring systems should be inspected if you’re considering buying a home with this type of wiring, or if you have problems with frequently tripping breakers, a sign that you may need to replace them.
