"These guys were great. Always answered my calls, texts in a timely manner, performed all the work we had discussed and then some ( went the extra mile when I asked to get us more plants at the last minute)! My experience with other landscapers were they never returned calls and seemed to have difficulty finding the plants we wanted - Sherpa Landscaping came through and did an excellent job - highly recommend!!!"

"We hired Michael Carvalho to do a general garden clean up, installing gravel paths, mulching. We were so happy , we added projects to build a fence, install irrigation and he worked with a subcontractor to install a new concrete driveway. Next up, spring plantings! Michael is very easy to work with, does excellent work, and is very knowledgeable."

"Rodrigo was incredible to work with, the wall turned out great. Answered all my questions and the price on the project was super reasonable. Where Rodrigo really shined was on his clean up. He is very good at what he does. Scott"

"Jamison asked great questions and brought up elements I had not considered, when visiting to bid the job. He proposed a sensible fix to my garage flooding in heavy rain. His bid was similar to others but I selected Unique because I felt my concerns and goals were heard and respected. Glad I did. They were able to get me on their schedule promptly, much appreciated as winter rains are upon us. The 6-person crew showed up on time and got the job done in 3 days as promised, including moving my garage door up to accommodate the higher slab. The crew demonstrated Covid-safe practices and though several are cigarette smokers, they kept cigs away from the garage and did not leave a single butt behind. Their finish work is nice, blends well with existing walkways & driveway. My garage is now usable: dry and with a smooth, well-poured floor and apron. Highly recommend this friendly, professional outfit."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Costs range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on size, material, and design complexity.

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. If you have particularly sloped land, consult a structural engineer to ensure your hardscaping is adding value to your home.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.

Costs depend on material type, labor rates, and additional features like decorative finishes or reinforcement.
