"Pacific Northwest Arborists was great to work with. Keith helped me realize that my browning cherry tree was not in great shape so I ended up having them remove it. They also pruned my apple tree which looks better than it has in years. The crew was great to work with - especially considering the 90 degree heat. I would definitely hire them again."

"We purchased a home in 2011 in southwest Portland that sits on nearly an acre of land. When we moved in we thought how nice that the house was surrounded by woods (privacy and nature galore). We have since realized that this 'natural retreat' caused two primary problems: not enough land for the kids and adults to play even though we had an acre footprint, claustophia as the brush and ivy and blackberry bushes slowly closed in around us. I love the house and the land, but don't be fooled, maintaining an aestheticly pleasing landscape when your house is 'in the woods' is a tremendous challenge. What at one point can seem like a intentional, mature, focused landscape can quickly transform into an  overgrown mess. We contacted Douglas and Ramos Cleanup to intitially clear one of the  side yards and lay barkdust. Douglas made an immediate effort to come to the property and promptly provided a bid. The bid was reasonable and lower than one other company I contacted. My wife and I decided to hire Ramos. Perhaps the best decision we have made since moving  into the house two years ago.
These guys are unbelievable. They came on a Saturday exactly at the time they said. By the time they had finished, my wife and I had decided to hire Ramos to perform a much more comprehensive clearing project. The idea was create a clean and groomed mature landscape all the way around the house that would act as a buffer to the forest that remained at the perimeter of the property. They came back the next two days (working 10 hours on Sunday) with a team of 6 or 7 and literally transformed the property. When they finished, my wife and I simply walked around the land dumfounded. They not only cleared trees, massive stumps that had been swallowed by ivy, blackberry bushes, years of overgrowth; they also new exactly what to perserve. They trimmed the shrubs and trees meticulously, uncovered plants we never even new were there, and made everything look spotless. My wife immediately commented how relaxed the place now made her feel. Bingo. They gave a bid at the beginning of the project and stuck to it even though they uncovered (literally) challenges (huge old growth stumps) along the way. I don't even know how many dead and dying  trees they removed, but it was a ton. They even cleared a larger area in the front of the house because they knew that was what was needed to make it all come together. I can't say enough good things about this company. Hire them without concern (and I rarely have ever said that about any company). They are the only people I will use for now on. They are professional, courteous, efficient, and knowledgable. They busted they tails to transform our property. 10 out of 10.

"I hired Jose to remove "volunteer" bushes growing in my juniper along my embankment slope. I originally met with him to remove a tall leaning pine tree. He spoke openly and honestly about the trees on my property and professionally advised NOT to remove the leaning tall pine tree. He backed up his advice with his very logical and sensible scientific horticultural research and experience. He explained that, even though he is losing the money he could make if he just removed the tree, he honesty did not believe there was a need to do so. He noted that the tree is healthy and is part of a root system that has joined other trees in my yard to keep the embankments from sliding downhill. He also pointed out that the upper part that is leaning is only doing so to reach the sunlight, is very strong and would not, in all probability fall during a winter storm. JV has such excellent knowledge that I trusted his wisdom and experience. Instead of tree removal he removed unwanted bushes."

"My experience with Scott was awesome, he was easy to communicate with and got back to me quickly. He helped me come up with solutions to a few of the lingering unfinished projects I had around my house I just needed help with. Scott just made everything easy and was very conscientious about cleaning up my space before he left. I will definitely hire this handyman again."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Yes, carefully prune back dead branches—don’t wait for pruning season. This helps keep your maple tree healthy and also helps prevent large branches from falling unexpectedly. Don’t seal the cut branch—trees can naturally take care of these wounds—but be sure to remove any source of fungus or pest infestation to help save the tree.

DIY is risky and not recommended for large trees; professional services ensure safe removal and proper disposal.

A palm tree's lifespan typically ranges from 40 to 100 years, though some species can live much longer. For example, certain types of Date Palm trees can live for over 200 years. The exact longevity of a palm tree is influenced by several factors, including its species, size, climate, and growing conditions. To maximize your palm's lifespan, provide proper care and maintenance, such as ensuring it gets enough sunlight, water, and nutrients, and protecting it from pests and diseases. For expert maintenance tips, consider consulting a professional arborist.

Licensing requirements for arborists, also known as tree surgeons, vary by state and municipality. Many areas require a license, which often involves specialized education and experience. Even if not mandated, it's wise to hire a licensed professional as they tend to have more experience. Beyond licensing, look for certifications from organizations like the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) or the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA), as this indicates a higher level of expertise. Certified arborists must typically pass a comprehensive exam. Always confirm that the arborist has a business license and is fully insured to protect yourself from liability. Seeking positive recommendations from local homeowners is also a good step in finding a qualified professional.

Late winter is ideal, but if you’re pruning apple trees in the spring, prune them as early as possible in the season. You want to ensure your tree is just creeping out of dormancy and hasn’t started pushing out new growth. If you prune your tree too late into spring, you generally won’t see results until the following year.

That said, there’s no pruning season for unhealthy growth. Remove dead, dying, or diseased branches as soon as you notice them, regardless of the time of year.
