"Amazing professionalism, work ethic, & a beautiful job! I cannot say enough good things about Shades of Rose & the work they did on our house painting! Their level of professionalism, communication, swiftness in getting the job done, and the beauty of what my house looks like now are amazing. I have a 1927 bungalow that needed experts in lead removal. Though the front was in good shape, the Southside of my house had started to peel and a few boards needed repair. I contacted Shades of Rose owner, Tyler, and he got back to me right away! Unlike other painting places who sent their employees, Tyler made time & came out within the week to go over details with me. He was very attentive and explained the whole process & made a quote. His quote didn't change! We scheduled a time a few months in the future and he followed up with me both a week before and then the day before to solidify the time. He also let me know that I could count on him to pick out colors & pick up the paint. This was a huge relief! I was guided about their next steps at each turn. I can't tell you how unusual this is: to have such incredible communicators who are also friendly, knowledgeable, & capable! When at first an employee didn't show up, they didn't put my project on hold. They had backup staff who were there so that my house was taken care of and painted swiftly. One of his main employees, Paul, headed up the project and he was also friendly, clear in his communication, & really knowledgeable. Tyler introduced me to him right now. They brought their team and accomplished the job with such finesse, clarity, and calm -- even in the midst of a huge downpour -- twice!!! They put down huge tarps and cleaned up after each day. A few perks that made this service even more awesome: !. Tyler gave us an Angie's list discount. 2. They painted the railing of our front porch on the last day! This was a huge amazing surprise! 3. They gave us a 3-year warranty and explained why we might need it (e.g. lighter colored paint in the sun) -- "Don't worry, Tyler told me. "Just call us and we'll come out and paint free of charge!" Did I mention they offer exceptional service? Our house looks so bright and cheerful! Several neighbors have stopped by to tell us how great it looks! They're also wondering if we're moving -- but, we're not! We're going to be enjoying what feels like to live in a house that looks new! Thanks, Tyler, Paul, Jasmine, & the whole team @ Shades of Rose Painting! We appreciate you!"

Small jobs welcome

"They gave us a very fair price, then did an excellent job on our deck cover. They kept us updated on every phase of the project. The work on site was done efficiently by a small crew and completed in a short time. We would gladly hire them for a future project."

"Elias Contruction provided a detailed estimate after inspecting the roof and making some qualified recommendations. The project required a few change orders that were not clarified in writing. I would recommend hiring Elias if you get changes in writing. They cleaned up pretty well although they missed a few things due to finishing in the dark. Overall satisfied with the job and cost was 60% of other bids due to sheathing adjustment."

"

Ken was very prompt and responded to our phone call . Came to house ,inspected and the gave us a great bid. His crew was out first and pressure-washed deck ,gazebo and all deck boards to see what or what need to be replaced before sanding and staining. After 3 days his crew was back out to patch, paint and do prep work. They were very efficient and most of his employees have been with  him for years and know exactly what Kens high standards and his expectations are. He is very particular about what needs to be done. They finished after 4 days with Ken helping. Also did our gazebo and even took down awnings and replaced. They used Cabot stain and back brushed. They also had given us our choice of stains, so we could research them. I have had houses painted and stained many times but never with the quality& workmanship that they did. I am very happy with results and will use him again.

"I contacted several contractors to look at and bid my job. Several would not even come out saying the job was too small. Two other contractors arrived, took measurements and never got back to me - extremely RUDE!!! I found a totally different experience with LTW & D's. I e-mailed them pictures of the window to be replaced and my "desires" for the job. I was contacted within a few days by their sales person, Alvin Chan. Alvin was a bit late for our appointed time, but called to let me know he was running late due to traffic issues - VERY PROFESSIONAL!! Alvin took pictures and measurements and discussed the job with me. To my surprise, he called later that afternoon with a quote. The cost was about what I thought it should be - so Alvin returned the next day with a contract. After contract signing - the experience only got better. Appointments were made with two project managers, Keith and Lisa. Both were on time and had some great suggestions for the project - and was assured they would both check on the status of the job once it got started. The communication level was EXCEPTIONAL with Tracy in the office giving me status updates on my window order as well as installation dates. Unfortunately, we had two lengthy delays in the job start date due to Portland's snow storms. Once we had a break in winters weather, the job date was set and a crew of 3 showed up on time. Manny, Carlos and Tyler were the three assigned to my job. Manny, being the lead, had XLNT communication upon arrival and discussed what they were going to do and to make sure we were "all on the same page" with project desire. It took the first day to remove my old window, install the three new windows and trim out the work. The second day was adding the roof eave and craftsman corbels. I am a PERFECTIONIST!!! I am absolutely 100% pleased with the work these 3 "craftsmen" did on this project and the pride in their work shows!! The interior trim work was done by Manny and is simply beautiful! Carlos trimmed out the exterior and perfectly matched my exiting craftsman-style trim around my front door. Tyler was the ground guy and I can tell the three make a great team. Keith and Lisa did, indeed, check on the status of the project, as promised. Lindsey, in the office, kept me informed of any updates during the project. I cannot say enough about my positive experience with this company, from start to finish an absolute joy to work with. I would, without hesitation, HIGHLY recommend this company!!!"

"I bought their contractor for a day at $300.00 which seemed like a deal. The thought was an online video indicated that the project could be done in one day by an inexperienced person. I met with the owner and we agreed that maybe it would take two of his experienced experts An entire day (so $600). We had challenges right in the beginning. There was an electricity outage in the neighborhood that slowed work as they could not use their saws or drills, then the two guys spent a long time arguing about how to do it, then the first four hours were up and one guy left and the other guy diligently stuck around to make up for the time wasted arguing and manually sawing which I appreciated(just to back up a second I had called the owner in the morning to discuss the outage and rescheduling and we had agreed that it would be okay as the equipment had batteries). The manager and I worked out a deal to bring out the one guy for an extra day at the same rate to finish it up and I want to say that I ended up adding one more day but this was two years ago. Nice hard working guy, just slower and less efficient than others I had worked with (in his defense he cost half as much). In the end my under deck roof is okay...it has a lot of spots that leak so my level of satisfaction is not high. In the end I got the work done at $600 (or was it $900?) This was a while back. It took two days I think, maybe three. At the end of the day I paid a C price for C quality work. In retrospect I could have recruited my brother to help me do it but it would have taken us four times as long and I can’t say the quality would have been better. Honestly if I had bid the whole job itself another crew might have charged me $3,000+. So with labor and materials I paid $1,200 maybe $1,500 and it’s adequate. I did appreciate the managers flexibility in extending the special price over additional days and letting the one guy stick around to make up for the bickering and electrical outage."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

No, it is not okay to paint over rotted wood. Painting over rotted wood will not address the underlying issue and can trap moisture, leading to further decay. Properly addressing the rotted wood by removing and replacing or repairing the damaged areas is necessary before you can even consider painting.

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

Yes, you can waterproof any wood that has not already been treated. A good way to test this is to splash some water on it. If the water starts to bead up, the wood is treated and most likely doesn’t need another coating.

Yes, it is generally a very good idea to seal your deck after pressure washing. Power washing removes not only dirt and debris but also a thin layer of wood, leaving the surface exposed and more susceptible to weathering. Sealing is almost always needed after this process. After a general cleaning, sealing isn't automatically necessary if the existing sealant is still intact. You can test the surface by placing a few drops of water on it. If the water beads up, the sealant is working. If it soaks into the wood, it's time to apply a new sealant. If it has been a few years, it's wise to remove the old sealant, wash the deck, and reseal for maximum protection.

An exterior paint job typically lasts between 5 and 10 years, though this can range from 3 to 17 years depending on several factors. The longevity is influenced by the quality of the paint and primer, the quality of the application, the local climate, and the type of surface being painted. For example, paint on wood siding may need to be redone every 3 to 7 years, while painted brick can last up to 17 years. Aluminum siding often needs repainting every 5 years.
