"Professional House Painters painted the exterior of my two-story home (2 coats), including trim and door, and refinished the deck. They were very professional, fast and responsive. They came when they said they would and finished in record time. Their contract is detailed (not just a summary) and includes a two year warranty. Cost included the prep work, painting, upgrade for better paint and deck. The outcome was BEAUTIFUL. I highly recommend this company (Ramon and his workers)."

"Tyler and his crew were very professional and easy to work with and did an excellent job repainting our 1930s tudor-style home and garage. He patiently helped us pick colors and provided many samples, and we couldn't be happier with the results.
Shades of Rose made a very competitive bid and, more importantly, demonstrated that they could safely and competently handle the lead-abatement issues that are so common among older homes like ours. Several other bidders whined and moaned about the recent regulations for lead treatment -- one bidder even recommended that we completely replace our cedar siding!  Shades of Rose provided real solutions and put us at ease.

Small jobs welcome

"Baltazar and his crew did an outstanding job restoring my decks and repairing and staining the stairs and railings on my home. Because my house was built in 1900, it has plenty of unique quirks and intricate details that required extra care and attention. Their workmanship was exceptional, and it was clear they take pride in producing high-quality, detail-oriented results. Baltazar communicated with me clearly throughout every stage of the project, keeping me informed and making the entire process stress-free. He was also very respectful of my budget and timeline, working with me to ensure everything stayed on track. The entire crew was professional, friendly, and a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend Baltazar and his team to anyone looking for quality craftsmanship and reliable service for a deck restoration, repair, or staining project."

"Jarring Painting did everything we expected and within the 2 day time frame they allotted. The final result is a fresh new look from the street on our accents and trim. The only downside was a 2 day scheduling delay getting started and a change in the weather. We would definitely recommend them for your projects."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

It’s a good idea to sand your porch before painting. This will remove loose or chipped paint and debris, and give you a cleaner surface so that your new paint goes on smoothly. But if the existing surface is in good condition, it’s not necessary to sand your porch before you paint.

No, it is not okay to paint over rotted wood. Painting over rotted wood will not address the underlying issue and can trap moisture, leading to further decay. Properly addressing the rotted wood by removing and replacing or repairing the damaged areas is necessary before you can even consider painting.

Eggshell and satin finishes are best for porches because they sit in the sweet spot between scuffable matte and distracting high gloss. Your porch sees a fair amount of wear and tear, so you don’t want paint that’ll show every mark like matte, but you don’t want to be blinded by glossy paint in the sun either. Eggshell and satin have durability and a look that sits nicely in the middle.

Stains penetrate wood best when it's cool and dry, so you want to avoid moisture. If the wood is wet upon application, or if it rains before the stain dries, the water will soak into the wood and displace the staining solution. This leads to a flaky and blotchy look, which is the opposite of a sumptuous even coat. Once the stain has fully cured, after about 3 days, rain shouldn’t cause you any problems.

Various kinds of substances and deck preservatives act as protective coatings for wood to prevent rot, which is caused by water getting into the wood and creating cracks and splits. Stains, paints, and sealants are the three best options to protect your wood, but there are also oils, varnishes, and waxes available. You’ll need to reapply sealant at least once per year, and you should inspect your wood deck regularly to look for signs of damage or general wear and tear.
