He explained everything being done, gave me options for how to approach problems, and showed me a few basic troubleshooting things I could do myself in the future. Will definitely call Service Now for any HVAC needs in the future!"

"We called several HVAC companies for our ductless mini split, but Aviator was the only one that responded quickly. They fixed the issue the next day and saved us from replacing the whole system. Excellent service!"

"Integrity Air is A-1 in my book. Great prices, great installers and wonderful customer service. I had been told by other HVAC companies that AC would not fit in the space I had, but Integrity found a way and did a wonderful job. The installers were quick and very courteous, my salesman answered every question I had. And the price was very reasonable, much lower than I expected."

"This is actually my second time using Better Air Northwest. We used them last year on the home we were selling and I was impressed with them at that time so I had them come to our new home this year. The arrive on time, are very professional and explain everything as they go along. They discovered a section of the duct work that was damaged so we had them come out a second time and replace that section. We received the same quality workmanship."

"Super friendly, super honest with a CAN DO attitude. They certainly went the extra mile with us. We had a difficult install scenario but Tom put the extra time and effort into planning out what needed to be done to get it right. All done in 1 day. We are beyond satisfied! I definitely would recommend Glacier HVAC. Great service!"

"Ben Fish showed up right on time, went up to my attic space for a visual inspection (something I should have done a long time ago but didn't) and measured the depth of insulation, appliance efficiency, energy loss from floor/walls/windows, and put it on a nice, easy-to-read spreadsheet, as well as throroughly explained everything.  There was absolutely no pressure to buy anything, as there had been in the past with HVAC repairmen.  One reason I wanted this audit was for the impartial 3rd party feedback, which is exactly what I got.

"Prior to calling Oregon Heating I had another company come out to check on the condensation pump. The young man ended up "breaking" the heater and told me I needed a new heater. I was without heat for the weekend. Then I went to Angie's List.
Chris, from Oregon Heating came out on Monday and fixed the "break" (it was just a loose connection), and replaced the pump. He came back a few days later to replace a part the other company missed.
Chris was professional, friendly and very thorough. He explained what he was doing and why. I now know how this heater works and how to maintain it.
I will only use Oregon Heating for my HVAC needs and recommend that others do the same.
Sally Combs"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

One of the fastest ways to unfreeze an AC unit is to turn off the unit and, if it’s warm outside, use the fan-only mode to help blow warmer air through the unit to speed up the defrosting process. While it may be tempting to use a hair dryer to defrost the air conditioner, that high heat can damage the coils.

After defrosting, if you can safely solve the issue with a fix like changing the filter, go ahead and do so. Otherwise, call in a pro before turning your AC back on.

No. Evaporator coils are designed to work with specific refrigerant types, and they are rated by what kinds of refrigerant they use. It’s indicated with an “R” code. It’s important to match your evaporator coil and refrigerant or your system will not work properly. An AC technician can tell you what type of refrigerant your system needs and what evaporator coils will work with it.

The best time of year to purchase or replace an HVAC system, including components like an air conditioner or furnace, is during the off-season—spring and fall. During these periods, HVAC professionals are less busy than in summer and winter, when extreme temperatures create urgent demand. Shopping during the off-season can lead to savings of 10% to 15% on an AC unit and allows you more time to find the best deal and other cost-saving incentives. Typically, air conditioning units go on sale in the fall after demand drops, while furnace prices tend to decrease in the spring.

While most air conditioners can last between 10 and 20 years, they will only last this long (or longer) if properly taken care of. Routine maintenance and inspections help keep your AC unit running in tip-top shape but understanding what factors will decrease its lifespan will also help keep your unit running cool.

Some things that shorten your AC’s lifespan include:

  • Extreme outdoor conditions, like high humidity or extensive salt spray

  • Improper installation

  • Extended run times, either by the unit being too small or the thermostat setting too low

  • Not performing required maintenance

HVAC companies may charge an hourly rate or a flat fee. Hourly rates typically range from $100 to $250 per hour, with an average around $175. Some contractors charge a flat fee for specific services, such as an inspection, which can cost between $150 and $500. The total cost of an HVAC service is influenced by several factors, including: the urgency of the service (emergency repairs after hours or on holidays cost more), the time of year, the type, size, and brand of your HVAC system, the specific repair needed, and whether you have a service contract.
