"I could NOT have been more pleased by the work performed by EM Painting and Remodeling, LLC. They were completely professional, organized, and practiced. Their plan was evident and their execution was flawless. I knew this job was a big and complicated one, and not only did they eagerly take it on, but they completed it in a timely manner and I worried about nothing. The end result was better than I imagined. Finally, they took such great care protecting the rest of my house--my plants especially--with ingenious solutions to containing the inevitable dust and debris that accompanies this type of residential work. I was more than pleased with the whole process and would NOT hesitate to recommend them to all my friends and family and anyone who asks!"

"Brandon was great. Very professional and courteous. Pricing seemed fair. Would have used them but we received an offer on our house As-Is. I would consider Freedom Contractor for future projects."

"Work was started promptly in early July and accomplished efficiently, until it slowed down and dragged on. Crew was pleasant and capable.   Work was finally completed in mid-November, after dispute over final payment. Major work was well done overall but the finishing up was not as well done. To successfully work with Buccilli Contractor it is essential that the contractor's proposal specify all work to be performed.  I accepted a general kitchen remodel proposal and then had a dispute over $2,000 for installation of backsplash, which I believed to be part of proposal.  Dominic Buccilli is a decent man and we resolved the issue.

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

If the bowing basement wall is less than 2 inches, steel or carbon fiber straps are the best solution. For bowing that is more than 2 inches, wall anchors are the most effective. A contractor can help you decide the best method of repair for your home's foundation and also address the root cause of the trouble.

Yes, you can hang picture frames, shelves, and other items on Trusscore panels. For lightweight items (less than 30 pounds), the company recommends using adhesive strips rather than nails or screws. However, you’ll need to secure heavier objects to a stud in the wall. In these situations, Trusscore recommends cutting away the panel material and fastening the object to the stud with metal hardware.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.
