"Tommy, Justin, and Dre did a fantastic job! We had a new condenser, evaporator coil installed, replaced and upsized some of the duct runs which were incorrectly done by another contractor. Tommy, Justin, and Dre were Courteous, professional. They worked very neatly and cleaned before they left. I would definitely recommend Carolina Comfort Air for any of my future air-conditioning needs!"

"We needed the 32 year-old ductwork replaced in our second story due to heavy infiltration of dust, pollen and bits of fiberglass insulation from the unfinished attic portion from deteriorated ducts. Given our pretty severe allergies to tree and grass pollen, the second story rooms were mostly unusable and even the first floor a problem, not as bad but still unpleasant. Even our cat was suffering. Drew, the sales manager, gave the whole system a very thorough review. He measured our rooms and discovered the system was oversized for the square footage, which not only put strain on the blowers but made the sound at the registers so loud it was difficult to speak on the phone in my office. He recommended an additional register in the hallway between the rooms. Glad he did. The thermostat is located in the hallway which also looks out over a large room with a cathedral ceiling. The new outlet has helped normalize the temperature and the AC/Heat run much less now and give more even temperatures. He also recommended a full house filter on the blower and an in-duct LED purification device that treats mold, dander, pollen and dust. Again, glad he did. They have made a big difference very fast, especially in pretty dramatically reducing dust and improving our respiratory systems. We had the same devices installed on our downstairs unit. We also had a detached first floor duct. In an above and beyond move, Drew went into the crawl space to check it out and temporarily repaired the duct until Maynor could replace it. The installation team, Jeff and Seth, were the superheroes of the project. There were two ducts so tight under the roof they looked as if they couldn't be replaced without tearing out part of the ceiling. One of those ducts had been shredded all the way through by an animal. It came out right over my desk and had been raining pollen, etc. down on me for some time. Seth managed to squeeze into the tight spots and replace the ducts all the way to the boxes. Both guys were very professional and personable and did a great job as unobtrusively as possible in a single day. Also very proud of the company and obviously happy to work there. Maynor sounds like a very customer and employee focused company."

"We purchased the deal on a weekend and they called on Monday to schedule the time for the next week. The crew arrived on time and inspected our duct work. It was determined that the duct work on the first floor had active mold growth and because of the type of piping (flexible plastic) the first floor ducts were too dirty to clean properly and needed to be replaced. That was scheduled for the next week. They also cleaned the 2nd floor ducts and sanitized the whole system. We were given credit for what we had already paid. We had an issue with no air coming out of one of the vents and the owner came out and fixed it (had come loose)."

"I set up an appointment for a quote from Cape Fear based on a recommendation from a neighbor, and Justin came on time (he actually called and asked if it would be OK if he came early). He was easy to work with, seemed very knowledgeable, and very thorough as he looked at my current setup and discussed the various options for replacement. I liked some of the recommendations he made as far as adjusting some of the duct routing to ease air flow. I decided to have him quote a 2-ton Trane XL16c packaged AC / Gas Furnace unit and XL16c hybrid (AC and gas furnace / heat pump), which was brand new at the time - it wasn't even in their system yet. When I was provided with a quote, the paper listed the 3-ton unit since the 2-ton unit was so new, but Justin assured me that the price was for the 2-ton unit. I received another quote for the same unit from a different company, and the price was significantly lower. So, I went back to Justin and asked him to double check the price. He did confirm that the price listed on my quote was for a 3-ton unit and provided a new number for the 2-ton unit, but I was left with a bad feeling over what would have happened if I hadn't received a competitive quote and questioned them. Also, the other company I dealt with talked with the Trane rep, and stated while the XL16C gas pack was available in a 2-ton unit, the hybrid unit (with gas furnace and heat pump) was not available in a 2-ton unit. This quote process was at the end of December, and they offered an extra $500 off if we would install before the end of the year. Would they have taken the money for a 3-ton unit and only delivered a 2-ton unit, or would they have realized the error when I went to pay and said 'we quoted you the wrong price'? If I ordered the hybrid unit and paid for a 2-ton unit, what would have been delivered? These could have been honest mistakes or not - I really have no way of knowing. In the end, I didn't feel comfortable with the way the quote process went, so I decided to go with another vendor."

"Exceptional service. My AC went out and Woody was able to check out the system within a couple of hours. Knew a new system would be eminent and he provided a very good price and was able to get it installed in less than a week. Would definitely recommend."

"Happy they were available the next day and able to get AC unit up and running. Quote went up significantly at end of visit for us. Service time was an hour or less. Quoted $85 service visit and $175 for replacement of dual run capacitor ($25 for part, rest was expertise with install) I agreed and expected around $260 for bill. He asked to use my water hose to cool system and got things going. Next he went inside to test air flow vents and all was working. He then prepped the invoice and added $85 fee for cooling unit. Never discussed or mentioned there was a fee so I was surprised but he said it was the norm. Final bill $370. We needed air so glad it’s done. Also went into the backyard before I arrived then asked if it was ok. Fortunately I didn’t have any pets so it worked out and i was less than 5 minutes out. He ran over at first appt so he had a later arrival but it was in the window quoted. Stressful when our AC went out but thankful that we’re back up and working again."

"ARS did a very good job installing my air conditioning unit. They took the time necessary to move a piece which was in the way of installation. Then it was put back in the appropriate manner and when a part didn't work, they rigged it to work until the part could be replaced. The part was replaced the next day and the AC works as it should."

"My overall experience with that a thermo direct was positive my only issue was that they trampled some ground cover I had around the air conditioner never mentioned it to me. That being said, who would not be happy to have ac on a 90-degree day after a hot evening without ac. Lastly thermo direct was very responsive. They showed up quickly!"

"Got home tonight and my air conditioner was not runnning. I went outside and one of the lines going into the ac had ice on it. Sent Blanton's an email and they called me first thing in the morning. Nic came out and advised me on problems he found and recommended work. He also advised on what I should just monitor and not replace at this time. He was friendly, explained everything he found and I did not feel I was being preyed upon when in need."

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

A new HVAC system can increase your home's value by about 5% to 7%, which can translate to an added value of $2,500 to $3,000. The return on investment (ROI) can be around 30%, especially if you upgrade the entire system, including ductwork and insulation. Adding modern features like a smart thermostat can further increase your home’s value by making the heating and cooling systems more efficient and convenient. However, since a new unit can cost $10,000 or more to install, it's important to weigh the upfront cost against the potential increase in home value. For a specific assessment, it's best to consult a local AC installer.

A few drips here and there should not be cause for concern, but if your unit is leaking a large amount of water, then it’s advised that you stop using it until the problem is identified and a solution is determined. The more you use it during a leak, the more issues it will cause.

A blockage in the ductwork may prevent air from flowing through the vent. If some rooms in your home are very hot or cold and another isn't, that can be a sign that a vent is blocked. Another sign of a blockage is a buildup of dirt or dust around the vent. In either case, a duct installer or cleaning service can investigate the issue for you and recommend a course of action.

No, it’s not normal for AC vents to drip condensation. A sweating AC vent is a sign of something wrong and can lead to issues like air duct rust or mold growth. Your HVAC unit might not be working efficiently because of a dirty filter or clogged ducts. Alternatively, your ductwork might not have adequate insulation, which allows the cool air in the ducts to meet the humid air outside, causing condensation.

There are several tell-tale signs that your AC coils need cleaning, including:

  • You’re getting higher electricity bills.

  • Your home doesn’t feel as cool as it usually does.

  • Your AC unit is running longer than usual to cool your home.

  • Your home is more humid than usual.

  • The coil is covered in frost while running.
