"RCL is our go-to for EVERYTHING and the work is flawless!! We had them do a partial basement remodel, repair of a huge crack in our foundation, remodel of our kitchen and four bathrooms, and painting and incidental repairs. They are very talented, can do pretty much anything, and their integrity is beyond anything I get from anyone else. Highly recommend!!"

"Artur did a wonderful job. He did all that I asked. He answered my questions. He helped me understand my mistakes in some of the tools I had purchased for the project. He was very professional. Now my pegboard hangs solidly on the wall in my sewing room. Thank you!"

"Moises and his team were absolutely phenomenal. What looked to be a simple repair became much more complicated and difficult as he began the repairs, but he still completed the job, with stellar results, ahead of schedule by working *outside* through a torrential downpour. He was professional and clearly dedicated to doing the job correctly, not just quickly. He even fixed a couple of minor things around the area that weren't entirely part of the job, but were easy fixes. For instance, he fixed a broken latch on our fence gate because he happened to have the wood screws in his hand. I would absolutely hire him again to do any work in the future!"

"Bobby Nesbitt is the owner of newlife handyman services. He was recommended by a friend a few years ago, and we use him for all types of projects. He has repaired and replaced kitchen cabinets, put in drywall, and repaired/renovated my front porch recently. His work is excellent, clean and durable. He is good-natured and did mind my young sons watching him work and ask questions. We have asked him to help us with a larger project in the coming months."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. If you have particularly sloped land, consult a structural engineer to ensure your hardscaping is adding value to your home.

Depending on who you hire to build a retaining wall, the average cost, including demolition and reconstruction, for a 50-foot wall that's 4 feet in height is between $7,000 and $24,000.

Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

While vinyl is the least costly material for building a retaining wall, the most cost-effective method is to use wood or concrete blocks for a DIY retaining wall under 2 feet tall. Wood is inexpensive but lasts 20 years or more with care. Concrete can cost a little more but is stronger and will last longer with less maintenance.
