Smithwright Home Improvement is a general contracting company providing a broad range of home improvement and home repair services in the Suburban Maryland area. I am a company of one and use subcontractors only when absolutely necessary. 99% of the work I take on is performed by me. Smithwright Home Improvement is licensed with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission since 2004 under license# 89597. I've done mostly flat-fee work under contract with the home owner. Small projects, or handyman related work, bills out at $80/hour with a 3 hour minimum. Angie's List customers receive a 10% discount off labor charges that invoice over $500.00. Discounts do not apply to materials cost which are in addition to labor charges. I do not add any additional costs to materials. You pay what I pay. My business, up to now, has grown strictly through referrals from satisfied customers. "We chose VKB mainly on its reviews on this website. Overall the experience was very positive. We were pleased to learn that VBK did not charge a fee upfront to design the kitchen. Calvin (kitchen designer) made excellent suggestions to improve our original vision and was responsive to changes to the design. Calvin convinced us to choose wood floor and crown molding, and the type of range hood, and he was right on all counts! Because of the smooth design process with Calvin and reasonable price, we decided to sign on with VBK over other companies. The implementation phase had some bumps: the design drawings that Jason (project manager) and Ismar (crew leader) started with were not the updated version, but thankfully that was quickly rectified. In addition there were some misunderstanding on the scope of the painting area, but Calvin agreed to honor what we had discussed verbally, even though it was not spelled out in the contract. Jason listened and patiently explained the project process, and kept asking to make sure that we were happy with the progress. For example, he agreed to redo the placement of the undercabinet lights. He also accommodated our desire to donate our old cabinets to Habitat for Humanity, and Ismar and his crew carefully took the down the cabinets and stored them in our garage for pickup later in the week. Ismar, Luis, and the rest of the crew did a fantastic job installing and painting everything, and their experience showed in disguising the fact that our walls were not straight and the floor was not even. We were also impressed with the laser tools that they used to guide cabinet and light placements. The crew was careful, meticulous, and respectful, and they cleaned up throughly every day. There were other crews handling the flooring and countertops, who also did top notch work, and all were coordinated like clockwork by Jason. Along the way, we learned some lessons and offer the following advice: if you are particular about the placement of your celling lights, electrical outlets and switches, let the crew know, and they will do their best to accommodate. Also, pay attention to every single detail in the contract; if not specified, there can be a misunderstanding, and a deviation may require a change order and extra expense. Overall, we were extremely pleased with the excellent quality of the work, and even though there was a delay in the backsplash order, the job finished as projected. We definitely recommend VKB, and we love our new kitchen. Jason -- we are happy!"

"I have hired General Construction Millworks (also known as General Remodeling Group) twice now, both for renovations to my basement. Each renovation involved several components, including planning/remodeling, obtaining local permits, demolition, wall framing, drywall repair, electrical work, plumbing, installing flooring, painting, and more. The first job I hired them for was 4 years ago...they completely remodeled the family room side of my basement, completely removing some stairs and replacing them with new ones, along with a complete renovation of that room and attached areas. Then recently, this year in 2019, I hired them to renovate the other side of my basement, which is the laundry room, storage, and 1/2 bath side, in which they installed cabinetry, flooring, moved some plumbing, installed a sump pump with battery back up, and more. I have worked with several contractors, specialists, and handyman services, and my experience with this company has by far been the best. I find them to have competitive and fair pricing, they are honest and transparent about the work they do, and they follow all local codes and best practices. They also involve the homeowner in all issues and decisions. Like any relationship, the client still has to be clear about their expectations and follow up on their concerns along the way - and this company is very good about working with their clients. I found their customer service to be top notch, especially the head contractor I worked with, I had his cell number the whole time and he was very responsive to calls and texts. He made sure our project met the expectations we outlined in our contracts/agreements. Their work ethic is great, their pricing is competitive and fair, their quality of workmanship top-notch, and their customer service is outstanding. I can not recommend them enough."

"Work was completed. Contractor did an estimate to replace planks and return to do refinishing. The new planks were installed with labels face up. Not sure if that was a lack of attention to detail or not. I do not know how much that matters once the project is complete. Contractor also left behind his blower. After I called the company to let them know, they said they would have someone contact me to arrange to pick it up but no one ever did. It's still in my backyard sitting there under the tarp."

He came into a job that had been royally screwed up by a prior contractor (see review of Stevenson & Sons). He thoroughly inspected the property, prepared a detailed bid, gave us advice on the most important items and delivered a bid that could work with our budget and the existing lender requirements. His entire crew were professional and consciencious. Devin delivered on time, on budget with high quality work. He kept us informed throughout the process. The portico he built is frequently the subject of compliments by our neighbors (and people just driving by). We will use Devin to continue improving our home. "I looked for a contractor for over a year before meeting Steve at Chevy Chase Remodeling.  I was almost ready to give up after 5 higher bids from larger companies and what felt like an impersonal, assembly line exchange.  I immediately felt a connection with Steve when he came to look at our house.  He actually looked at the space, asked me what I wanted and had some very creative ideas.  He told me honestly why some of my ideas wouldn't work and why, when it was clear the other companies would have just slapped in whatever I asked for and gone on their way, with little concern for how the job actually turned out or whether we would be happy with it in the long run.  Steve's bid was reasonable and he seemed to really care about the job.  These traits were consistent throughout.  The team was punctual and courteous.  Every day they papered the entire area before starting work and took it down and swept in the evening.  There was very little dust and debris given the extent of the job.  I felt entirely at ease leaving them in the house all day while my husband and I were at work.  Whenever I had questions or ideas I would text or call Steve and he would provide prompt feedback.  Steve is calm, flexible, and very easy to work with.  Most importantly, he is fair and is not trying to gouge the customer.  He definitely puts the customer first.  I am a stickler for little things and the job is perfect.  It looks fabulous.  I have zero complaints.  I would use Steve and his team again in a heartbeat.
