The plumbers cut out the pipe and junctions and replaced the whole fitting with PVC, including a new clean-out cap that was easier to access. The time between initial visit and the job was less than a week (fortunately I was able to install a temporary collar that covered the hole and kept our house going in the interim) and cost about what you'd expect for that type of job. They were very conscientious about the repair, including going a bit above the estimated work to ensure the problem was completely covered and no new rusting issues would occur.
