"I called A-1 Superior Plumbing and they answered the call. They were able to accommodate my schedule and were out the following day and replaced the ejector pump. My dealings with this company were positive. Joe, who came to my home to do the job, was professional and efficient and I would definitely use them again."

"If you are ever in need of a fantastic sewer/drain/plumbing company, you should absolutely contact Flo-Maxx!! As a first time homeowner, I unexpectedly walked into a laundry list of issues. After having one company tell me I was a low priority, Flo-Maxx came to my rescue and from the first phone call they were a joy to work with. Every job they worked on they were prompt, communicative, courteous and honest. They put up with my 10,000 questions and always treated me with respect (rather than just as an unknowledgeable girl). They are not the cheapest option out there, but they are far more reasonable than the bigger/impersonal companies. Add to it that they truly take pride in their work, with Flo-Maxx you happily get more than what you pay for. Due to the number of issues this old house had I probably know Joe and his team better than I know my neighbors. Boss Man Joe, Martin, Kevin, Hassan, Mario, Elias, Felix, David and Luis were all a delight to work with. It didn't matter if it was sunny/60, thunderstorms, or snowing; weekday or weekend, they always showed up with a great attitude and ready to help. Special props to Martha too for being the gate keeper of it all and answering my many phone calls. Long story short, I will hands-down always recommend Flo-Maxx Sewer and Drain. Stop wasting time reading other reviews... just call them now. List of work done (so far) - Hydrojet to clear sewer back-up (twice), fixed leaking drain in laundry sink, replaced water heater & expansion tank, replaced ancient flood control system with lift station"

"When temperatures dropped to -50 with wind chill, the pipes to our basement bathroom sink froze. And as soon as everything began to thaw, (on Friday night) we found that we had a ruptured hot water pipe. Water was shooting out of the wall all over the bathroom. When it became clear that our usual plumber wasn't going to show up on Saturday, I frantically called half-a-dozen plumbers from Angie's List. Only Charlie got back to me and agreed to show up after his next job. On a day that he was clearly being overwhelmed with calls from all over the city, Charlie kept his word and showed up with his partner Dimitri. They quickly figured out there were no other leaks and repaired the pipe. On top of it, Charlie spotted two other unrelated plumbing issues in our HVAC room. They were minor now but could have turned into bigger problems down the road. His thoroughness and attention to detail allowed him to spot these hidden problems and save us headaches down the road. We had our water working in under an hour (on a Saturday evening!) and he charged a very fair price given the demands upon his time. He left our house at 5pm, his phone blowing up from other customers. I asked if he was going to have an end to the day soon, but he said he still had hours to go...he had promised other worried homeowners that he would help them today. THAT's the kind of dedication I want from my plumber. Call Charlie with confidence."

"We've now used Byran from Big Wrench for two very similar jobs, nasty fixes in the very tight crawlspace of our building in N Lawndale. First job we'd already gotten an estimate from a N side plumber we'd worked with before, but their price seemed very high and they didn't really seem to want to do the job. Luckily we found Byran. He took a careful look at the situation and gave a much lower price, which is exactly what he charged. On each job, Byran had to squeeze between joists through an access hole cut into the floor of a utility closet to get to the stacks. On the second job he had to lie on his back under the joists and work with his left hand while his right passed tools and materials over his chest. I watched him work both times (helped a little by passing tools etc) and was impressed at how careful and methodical he was, not just solving the immediate problem but also making it easier to do any future work (rodding etc.) Big Wrench is a one-man shop so bear that in mind, he can't answer the phone while his hands are full of hydraulic cement. Despite that though, I have found him very responsive. Byran is our go-to guy for plumbing, he's more than proven himself. Quality work at a very reasonable price. We also like companies where you deal direct with the owner. Highly recommended!"

"I could not ask for a better experience from a plumbing contractor. The technician, Tony, was prompt, courteous, extremely quick in assessing the problem and getting my old water heater replaced. Valerie, who was the phone representative that took my initial call, was so helpful and kind to me. Not to mention, their pricing was very reasonable and more than competitive in our market. I will certainly be using Young Plumbing again for my home and I am going to spread the word to my neighbors and friends if they need a great plumber. Just a very satisfying experience on every aspect of their service."

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

Always verify your property’s lead service line status, as older infrastructure requires targeted replacement planning. Homeowners are entirely responsible for the sewer lateral line from the house to the public main. Schedule non-emergency plumbing during spring or fall to avoid long contractor wait times following severe Lansing winter freezes or summer storms. Ensure all major work receives proper permits and is completed by licensed professionals.

Helpful?

Start by locating your main water shut-off valve near the front foundation wall to stop emergencies quickly. For minor plumbing issues, clear slow drains with a manual snake and avoid harsh chemicals that damage older pipes. During harsh Lansing winters, keep cabinet doors open under exterior sinks and maintain indoor temperatures above 68 degrees to prevent frozen pipes. Contact a local professional immediately for sewage odors.

Helpful?

The age of your home significantly impacts plumbing complexity. Many older IL properties feature heavily corroded galvanized steel pipes and cast iron drain lines. Regional clay-heavy soils expand and contract, shifting underground lines and causing root intrusion. Additionally, exterior pipes must sit below the deep 42-inch frost line. Full basements with below-grade fixtures require mechanical ejector pumps, adding further technical demands to your project.

Helpful?

Treat active leaks near the foundation, sewage backups, and frozen pipes as immediate emergencies. Regional clay soils retain moisture, causing rapid foundation damage from active leaks. Loss of hot water during freezing IL winters creates severe habitability hazards requiring urgent attention. Monitor minor issues like a single slow drain or a dripping faucet, and schedule non-emergency excavation work for summer when ground conditions are optimal.

Helpful?

Combining plumbing with other home upgrades is highly recommended. Many Lansing homes built in the mid-century still have original galvanized steel or cast iron pipes. Replace these aging lines while walls are open for a bathroom remodel to avoid reopening finished surfaces later. Bundling projects under a single permit application also reduces inspection delays. If finishing a basement, add rough-in drains early to avoid breaking concrete twice.
