"Magic valley roofing was an absolute blessing for us. After a windstorm we were told our insurance would not cover the extensive damage. Justin Santana helped us negotiate with our insurance and found the necessary information to get as much of the roof covered as we could. In the end the insurance paid to not only replace the entire roof but also bring it all up to code. Communication was clear and consistent. Costs were explained and very fair. The workmanship and materials were high quality. Work was completed in a timely, efficient, and clean manner. We are more than pleased with the dedication and execution of service."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Hail is unlikely to damage a tar and gravel roof because the hailstones will hit the protective gravel rather than your delicate roof membrane. A tar and gravel roof is the most resilient flat roof option, which means it’s the best one for areas that see hail, fallen tree debris, and blown debris from intense winds.

Furring strips (also called wood stripping) are not always necessary for a metal roof installation, but they are highly recommended and may be required by local building codes or the roofing manufacturer's specifications. There are several key reasons to use them:

  • Energy Efficiency: Furring strips, made of wood or metal, create an air gap between the metal panels and the roof deck. This acts as a thermal break, reducing heat transfer into your home and improving overall energy efficiency.

  • Moisture and Condensation Control: The air gap allows for better airflow, which helps prevent moisture buildup and condensation under the metal panels.

  • Structural Support: They provide a solid, even frame to which you can attach the metal roofing panels.

It is especially important to use furring strips when installing a metal roof over existing shingles. Without them, the roof surface can be uneven, and you will experience greater solar heat gain.

Gable roof construction can last for 100 years or more without needing structural repairs, although the lifespan depends on your climate. Since gable roofs are great at shedding rain and snow, the actual roofing material on top will last for between 20 and 100 years or more, depending on the material you choose. If you’re unsure that your gable roof is up to par, have a roof inspector take a look.

While two-layer torch down roofs are easier to install than three-layer roofing, it is best not to DIY the installation. Torch down roofs require expert knowledge of the application process to get it right the first time and prevent leaks or poor craftsmanship, not to mention that roof work can be dangerous.

The installation may have been done correctly. However, improperly installed gutter guards can easily damage your shingles. Also, cheap gutter guards rarely come with installation fixtures. In the worst cases, they simply ask you to nail the guards in, which would sabotage your roof’s water resistance and thus void the warranty. To be sure, always check with your home warranty provider before making any modifications.
