"The work completed was of the highest quality. Danny, the owner of DM Building, is a fair and honest business owner, and very responsive. He has a very skilled group of people and they did a great job from start to finish. Our foreman, Scott, who treated the project like it was his own home, provided excellent guidance and help throughout the remodel. The attention to detail was impressive and suggestions were made along the way which made the house even better. Most of the workers are employees which helps in scheduling work. We did work with some contractors recommended and managed by DM Building for kitchen and laundry cabinets, as well as tiling and flooring--and they were professional and did excellent work. In my case, I had never done a remodel and my husband was the main contact in initiating the work. Unfortunately, he died when we were in the middle of the rebuild. Danny, Scott and his crew were very supportive and helped me through the remodel, over and above my expectations, accommodating additional changes and working with me to get everything completed. The house is beautiful."

"Sarah is the best designer ever! She helped me achieve functionality as well as create the aesthetic I wanted in my living room, kitchen, and dining room. She understood what I wanted and executed everything beautifully. The process was so much less stressful due to her. Highly recommend her!"

"We waited for an architect to help us with getting permit to remodel our bathrooms, 2 months went by and we got nothing. We decided to give Homeguide/Angie a try, and that's how we found Leslie with Leslie Andersen Consulting. We were told that the entire process could take 6 months and longer. To our surprise, from our very first conversation with Leslie to the day we have the permit issued was 3 months. Way ahead of schedule. It must have been the very clear plans she created and all the details she added that we didn't have much of back and forth with the city. Besides great attention to detail, she is an excellent communicator, a good listener, cheerful personality and down to earth at the same time. Most importantly, she really cares about what she does! It shows through her work. Last but not lease, we thought her fee was very reasonable - our contractor told us what to expect, Leslie's fee came below the mark. Thanks Leslie for helping us, we can't wait to make your drawings the reality. :)"

"In 2021, during the pandemic, Charles Taylor and company went the extra mile for my project and to communicate. He designed and hired the contractors for a beautiful custom renovation of my tiny house. His general contractor, Christian James (James Gang Construction), did extremely professional work. He did a full wall of tiling in my guest bath, floor to ceiling tile in my shower, and two kitchen walls . Charles redesigned my master bedroom layout. Offered several ideas. He hired the contractors that: painted my house inside and out, replaced the floors with quality vinyl planks, added tile, redid my ceiling lighting, added lights for the closets in both bedrooms, added a refrigerator nook, replaced my kitchen counter with beautiful white quartz, replaced all my faucets with Delta faucets in matching finish, chose and installed new window treatments, added a pocket door, replaced the picket fence outside with high quality redwood, painted all kitchen cabinetry, replaced toilets, vanities, kitchen counters and sink . Christian James built and finished two shelves in the kitchen. All of this was done with a I mind to cost, getting deals for the tile, planks, fence, pocket door and more. I canâ t say enough about Charles Taylor Home."

"Hired Pacific Sands after we lost our home in the Eaton Fires in Altadena. We were very happy with their team and the designs they finished for us. Their permitting team was amazing too, so happy they were able to help with that part of the process. too."

"Finally, after using three different companies, I talked to Luis at Brothers Landscape and they did not disappoint. I wish I found them 5 years ago and saved myself a lot of headache (and money from failed front yard landscape attempts). They weren't the cheapest (nor the most expensive), but his ideas were very creative and now that the job is complete, we are so happy with the result. Luis had to do some extra work to fix the other company's mess, but he did it superbly and we couldn't be happier. I get all kinds of compliments from neighbors and even delivery drivers tell us how much they like the design. Luis was very professional and what he said he would do, he did it. His communication skills were top notch as well. I always knew what was going on with the project and if there were any delays (I was left in the dark from other companies). I will definitely be using this company again for some work in the backyard because I know the work is well worth the money spent. Save yourself time and money from searching for your landscape company and give Luis a call. You will not be disappointed."

Architects questions, answered by experts

Hiring a contractor with knowledge about historic renovations and reviewing their previous work is important. You can find a historic home renovation contractor by calling your local historic preservation office, historical society, or any local historic museums nearby. The staff may have suggestions for specialized contractors who have worked for them. You can also ask them about historic home restorations that you have seen and liked in your area to get recommendations for pros.

Costs depend on project complexity, software requirements, and the draftsperson’s experience.

Blueprints are generally available for houses built after the early 1900s. Before then, detailed building schematics like blueprints were rarely used and even more rarely saved. If you have an older house and need blueprints, you can have a new set drawn up by an architect or draftsperson.

You have three options in terms of professionals who can draw up blueprints: a draftsperson, an architect, or a structural engineer. A draftsperson can sometimes draw up plans for new construction, but they more often work from approved plans for alterations or to provide 3D drawings. Architects are usually the best option for standard residential construction projects. Structural engineers might be necessary for custom home builds or for alterations that could affect your home’s structural integrity. Draftsmen cost the least of the three, followed by architects and then structural engineers.

Palm Springs homes and similar mid-century modern architecture took off in Northern California, Seattle, and the Midwest. You'll also find many homes that emulate the style in northeastern states, such as throughout Pennsylvania and New York State. That being said, you'll have the best luck finding this style in its original home: Palm Springs and the surrounding area.
