"Washer and dryer suddenly stopped working and we could not correct by checking electrical box. Ryan came to our house quickly and found that he could correct the problem with simple resetting the electrical box and did not charge for the service. He was informative, friendly and we have kept his card for any future electrical needs. You will not be disappointed if you hire Ryan Deeds, owner of Lock & Alert Electrical Systems. Thank you, Ryan."

"B and C Electrical were awesome! Super professional and really friendly. They showed up right on time, made sure everything was cost-effective, and actually fixed the problems we’d been having with our electrical panel for years. They did a much better job than others who came out before, and now everything works the way it’s supposed to. Couldn’t be happier with their work — I highly recommend them!"

"Matt was absolutely wonderful to work with. He is a very honest guy who does not try to push extras. He was very willing to work with my budget. He kept me very well informed about the progress on my project and met with me at my convenience. He came to my house after dark to walk the property with me, ensuring that the lighting in the yard was positioned correctly and how I wanted it to be. Matt is the first really honest and ethical electrician that I have hired and I am grateful to have found Roper Electrics. I will definitely be using him for any electrical needs in the future. He is knowledgeable and able to explain things well in terms that a non-electrician can understand at a reasonable level of complexity.

Electrical questions, answered by experts

No. When applied properly, electrical tape is designed to be an insulating material with high resistance to electricity. It can reinforce electrical connections and act as a safeguard to help ensure the electrical current stays within its designated pathways. However, it’s important to note that it can break down over time and you should never use it as a replacement for electrical wire caps.

Window AC units use a fair amount of electricity, but significantly less than central AC systems. Because they are more energy-efficient for cooling individual rooms or small spaces, their usage is comparatively low. On average, a window AC unit consumes between 500 and 1,400 watts, while a central AC system uses over 3,500 watts—meaning a window unit uses about one-third of the energy. This typically translates to a monthly running cost of $15 to $40, although this can vary depending on external factors.

Yes, GFCI breakers are required for all outdoor outlets. This code requirement applies to all outlets located on balconies, decks, patios, and other outdoor lounge spaces. In addition, outdoor outlets need to have watertight covers that provide protection when cords are plugged in. If you have an older home that may not be up to code, it's a good idea to also ask your electrician about adding GFCIs to some indoor areas. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and any other areas of a home that are commonly exposed to moisture should have GCFI breakers.

Yes, hot tubs can use a significant amount of electricity, primarily to keep the water heated. A typical hot tub uses between 1,500 and 6,000 watts, and the pump can add another 1,500 watts. This usage can result in a monthly cost of around $20 to $30. The exact amount of electricity consumed depends on several factors, including the hot tub's age, size, heater voltage (120V vs. 240V), usage habits, and thermostat setting. Newer, energy-efficient models generally use less power than older ones. To reduce electricity costs, consider investing in an energy-efficient model, using a quality insulated cover with a thermal blanket, and keeping the filters clean.

Yes, states and local governments can have additional building codes that address kitchen outlets. In most cases, these kitchen outlet codes simply refer to the NEC. However, states or local municipalities can have separate requirements for electrician licensing, such as requiring a permit to make big changes, and other details.
