"One of the smoke detectors in the master bedroom went out at 1:30 am Tuesday morning, and was beeping loudly every 30 seconds .  We replaced the 9 volt battery, which should have fixed the problem, but it didn't.  During business hours, we contacted the service department of the company who built our Carlsbad home 9 years ago.  We were advised to replace the batteries in each smoke detector (there are 7) in the house and reset the button on the original smoke detector with the problem.  We did that--it was still beeping long into the night and continued on the next day.  It was so loud we were unable to sleep in our bedroom for two nights. 
We contacted the home builder's service department again, and talked to the technician who said to unplug the connection and that should restart it.  However, the connection was poorly designed (as verified by the manufacturer, who we called), and it would have taken a jackhammer to unplug that connection.
We contacted Mr. Viereck thru Angie's list (we had used him before for other work).  My husband explained the problem and after discussing it with Mr. Viereck, he (my husband) decided it would be best to replace all the smoke detectors, since they would be out of warranty within the year and had a poor design--we weren't looking forward on going thru the beeping alarm
fiasco again . 
Mr. Viereck told my husband a few places where we could buy the smoke alarms, advised the timeframe he would be here and quoted a price.   He showed up close to the beginning of the time frame he quoted, did the work and even helped out with a carbon monoxide unit that needed new batteries.
