"Audit went great, he showed me where there was problems with my house, said walls were fine, but air sealing was needed in the attic.  Was told I would get a report with pictures and quote by no later than end of the week (1-2 days).
Got quote 8 days later, did not include photos as promised, included a quote for items I was told I didn't need, such as the wall insulation, and blown in insulation which is not needed.  I requested a more specific quote (just the air sealing we discussed) and the pictures that were promised, 11 days later and still no response.
I don't think I should have to pester and beg to get a proper quote.  If they do not want my business, that is fine, I got the information I needed, and find someone else to complete the work.
I was impressed at first with the original home visit, but very disappointed with the follow-up

"They did a nice job overall. They had to remove siding outside and blow in the insulation. They also did have to insulate one wall on the inside of the house as it was bricked outside. They drilled holes in the walls to blow in the insulation. They then filled the holes and have them ready for me to prime and paint. They moved the furniture when needed.

The windows did need caulking. The first window they used white caulk instead of clear. They did kinda a messy job , but then completed the job with clear caulk. It was completed nicely."

"He believes that frost during the winter was cause of the issue, and recommends that I simply insulate more where the moisture appeared (since there seems to be a lot of cold air coming in where we opened up the ceiling).  He believes that the roof is in good shape, and there's no cause for doing any expensive roof repairs at this time.
I appreciate the simple recommendation to start rather than suggesting expensive repairs.  I will definitely contact him if there does seem to be an actual roof leak.

"I have had Art come over and install a Solar Tube in our bathroom, which was awesome and not only do I recommend Art, I recommend Solar Tubes in general!!

We moved into a house recently that has 5 skylights in it, all of them were ancient and energy sieves.  I had Art price up replacing with new energy efficient skylights, with solar blinds to add extra insulation.   I'm so glad I did, as the old skylights were not only in bad shape, and energy inefficient, they had leaks, and were poorly installed.   He put down drop cloths wherever he was working, and you'd never know the guys were there after they left.  Can't ask for much more than that!!

My new Solar Tube, Velux skylights and solar blinds are awesome, and I know they were pricey, but wow...totally worth it."

"Contacted a few different companies and had two come out to inspect a large crack in the foundation. First company came out and indicated that the foundation had failed and needed piers put in to stablize the foundation. Crawlspace Solutions came in and indicated that they felt there was nothing failing with the foundation and that they could inject the cracks and warranty the work regardless of if there was a larger issue that required piers. Scott was the person that estimated and completed the work. He was extremely responsive and did a very good job of injecting the cracks. When Scott came to quote the work he also offered a price to apply spray foam to the walls and the sill to replace the fiberglass insulation that the previous owner of the house had on the crawlspace walls. Price included in review was to inject 2 cracks and apply the spray foam. Really glad we had the foam insulation put in. Way cleaner, durable and sealed up some areas that the other insulation could not take care of. Scott also spent extra time explaining some other areas to keep an eye out on to help ensure the foundation area is well managed from any further potential issues like down spout discharge locations, hose connections and just general drainage of the property. One of the concerns we had was if we spend all this money on the injection and the foundation ends up needing to have piers put in, how would that impact the warranty. Scott assured us that if any additional settling occurs and the repair fails, they would come back and repair the injected cracks after the foundation was stable."

"Stendahl Exteriors was very knowledgeable about the insulation problem/getting a new roof and new siding. They were able to complete the work in a very timely manner.  We weren't planning on the insulation being done but they were very helpful and courteous in helping us fix this."

"The Master cat company did an outstanding job.  The were both professional and respectful of the home we were living in while this project was being done.  They were very contentious of us and our home.  They covered their boots with booties and laid down runners to help protect our carpet,  even though it is old carpet. They were polite and answers any question I had along the way. They moved all of the furniture that needed to be moved to complete the project and set up containments to contain any containments from spreading through the house while they worked.

First they removed drywall that had mold on it in the upstairs bedrooms and replaced the drywall with mold resistant drywall.  They then matched the texture that was on the rest of the wall and drywall and painted it to finish it.

They then removed all of the insulation in the attic because it had gotten wet (the root of the problem) and treated the underside of the roof boards to kill the mold and also heap vacuumed it off.  The attic was then encapsulated to seal and prevent any future problems.

They installed new baffles between every truss for better air flow from the soffit vents and installed new insulation (higher R-value than what we had)

Master Cat was not the cheapest company that we got a quote from but they were doing the most to correct the problem and prevent future problems.  I felt most comfortable with them to fix the problem correctly.

I was not sure if they would come to the Milwaukee area since they are out of Northern Ill. but this was not a problem for them at all and they were very punctual.

I would use them again without a doubt.  I have already referred others to them.

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Mold can grow on garage ceiling insulation, which is why it’s important to install a vapor barrier behind the insulation and keep the space cooled and heated as you would your living area. Doing so will more or less eliminate the risk of mold growing on your garage ceiling insulation. You can also install a self-draining dehumidifier to help remove moisture, or opt for a foam board insulation or spray foam insulation that won’t harbor moisture and mold.

Insulating under a concrete slab foundation is a great way to improve the energy efficiency of your home, but it isn't necessary for outdoor projects like driveways, patios, sidewalks, and walkways. If you’re pouring in cold weather, insulating under the slab can help prevent heat loss from the concrete, aiding in proper curing. Along with accelerants, this can be a good way to ensure strong concrete despite pouring in the cold.

The primary purpose of insulation is to maintain comfortable temperatures in a home, whether that’s cool air when it’s hot out, or warm air in winter, but that’s not all it can do. All options will also minimize heating and cooling needs, lowering both your carbon footprint and energy bills in turn. And some options, like rigid foam boards, even offer soundproofing benefits, too.

Yes! Outdoor faucet covers work by enclosing the faucet with a thick, insulating material that will keep the faucet warmer than outdoor temperatures. They need to be sealed tightly against the house to work properly, though, so be sure to tighten the rubber strap or drawstring on the insulation cover to best protect your faucets.

STC (Sound Transmission Class) is a rating that describes how well a building material or assembly blocks airborne sound. A higher STC rating means less noise will pass through the material, providing better sound reduction. This rating system applies to various building components, including windows, doors, flooring, drywall, and insulation.

For context, a typical single-pane window has an STC rating of around 25 (where normal conversations are audible), while a well-sealed, double-pane window can exceed STC 45 (blocking loud speech and most music). It is important to note that for some products, like soundproofing drywall, the STC rating refers to the entire wall system, not just the individual panel.

Additionally, STC ratings are most effective for measuring sound reduction at mid-to-high frequencies, such as human speech, and may not accurately reflect how well a material blocks low-frequency sounds like bass music or thunder. Because of these factors, it is recommended to consult a professional to determine the right STC-rated materials for your specific soundproofing needs.
