"E was a great contractor to work with. He communicated consistently about the project, upheld the quotes he gave us for each phase, handled unexpected delays (damaged products that had to be reordered) well, and worked in a timely manner on our basement. He is personable and offered insight and suggestions where needed. I felt very comfortable having him in our home doing work while we were home and while we were gone. We highly recommend Unlimited Handiworks!"

"Mr. Broadwater has remodeled 2 bathrooms, our laundry room, installed a double-oven in my kitchen, and added an amazing kitchen nook with 3 large garden windows. He worked closely with us to understand our visions then made them all realities. We love his work and will hire him when we identify the next project!"

"Overall the job went well and happy with the end results. Dan (Martin) was generally on time and responsive to my questions. Price for work and materials was fair although it was a bit confusing coordinating his quote with my insurance claim. The only real hiccup with the job involved the carpeting. He quoted as part of the entire job (which we asked him to do for our claim) and the end result was ok but I feel it may have gone more smoothly for us to have that part done independently with another carpet specific professional as it appeared a bit out of his realm. We also asked him to do some other small jobs outside of the main basement job (lighting, ceiling repair, install new sliding door to deck) and those went well. I would recommend Martin Services to others."

"It was so-so. I thought it was way too expensive. They didn't take the plastic to the hole. There's no way to dry it out now. If they weren't going to do the insulation for it because of the cost, the fact that they sealed all the vents, they should've taped the plastic to the wall so the moisture couldn't get in to the crawlspace. They didn't do it the way I thought they should the first time."

"called about an enclosed back porch that needed some remodeling. found out that the porch was structurally unsound. david and his crew demolished and rebuilt the porch and added some ouside stairs. the process went well and david worked with me and provided different options. we had a few minor hiccups but he took care of them all. the price quoted was very reasonable even with the hiccups."

"I signed the bathroom remodel contract on Jan 25, 2019. Today is Jul 18, 2019 and the work has not been completed. Everyone you work with is friendly, professional, polite, and well-meaning in responsiveness. Edgar’s quality of work is outstanding and my bathroom is beautiful without a doubt!! But now that the company’s been paid, I’ve been forgotten. My windows don’t have screens, so I can’t open them for fresh air without bugs coming in. I was told the screens were ordered in May which was my last contact with anyone. The contents for under my vanity have been stored in boxes because my shelves have not been installed. This is unacceptable! Mr. Khader Mughrabi, VP, called me after I signed the contract to thank me for my business. I want him to know it’s been almost six months and the work’s still not done. I just want my job completed and after that I won’t contact Remodel USA again!!"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

The time it takes to finish or remodel a basement can vary significantly, ranging from a few weeks to several months or even up to a year. On average, the construction phase can take four to eight weeks, but the total project time can extend to three or four months when including planning and permits. The timeline depends on several factors, including the basement's size, design complexity, the scope of the work, and your contractor's availability. A more detailed breakdown for an average-sized basement might include: framing (3-5 days), electrical and rough-in plumbing (3-5 days), drywall installation (5 days), flooring (2-3 days), and final touches like painting and trim (about a week). If preliminary work like installing a waterproofing system or addressing structural issues is needed, the timeline could extend to six to twelve months. Factors like difficult access, material transport, and ventilation needs can also add to the project's duration.

Framing a basement takes three to five days, on average, when completed by a professional, though it may take longer for a larger space. Keep in mind this doesn’t include the time to complete the design, obtain permits, and install the drywall on the framing. On average, fully finishing a basement takes an average of 45 days.

Living in a finished basement is acceptable, but only if the space has the proper points of egress and includes smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to ensure the safety of the occupants. A good way to ensure your finished basement is suitable for use as living space is to get the basement finishing project properly permitted.

Unless you have extensive experience in construction work, remodeling a basement is best left to a professional. There are several tasks associated with this project that require exact precision, including:

  • Replacing insulation

  • Replacing carpet or other flooring

  • Adding heating and cooling

  • Adjusting or adding walls and doors

  • Altering or adding plumbing elements

If any of these elements is done incorrectly, it could severely impact the quality of your basement remodel and be dangerous. Changing a basement often comes with code safety requirements, like egress windows and proper ventilation. Therefore, leaving it up to a professional is often the best decision.

Roughing in and connecting utilities are the hardest parts of finishing a basement, and they’re the parts we typically don’t recommend doing as a DIY project. Unfortunately, your finishing timeline can be extended by weeks while you wait for contractors and inspectors to install electrical wiring, plumbing lines, and heating/cooling equipment and carry out inspections.
