"We had a great experience with the Lux Renovations and Owens Corning team. The whole process was very easy from designing the space, selecting colors, and having a contract manager who organized the entire basement remodel including all the trades and inspections. We were sold on the Owens Corning materials for the basement and that they were engineered specifically for a basement space. Would highly recommend this team for your basement remodel needs."

"Mr. Broadwater has remodeled 2 bathrooms, our laundry room, installed a double-oven in my kitchen, and added an amazing kitchen nook with 3 large garden windows. He worked closely with us to understand our visions then made them all realities. We love his work and will hire him when we identify the next project!"

"David was really good about walking us through the cost, keeping things realistic and within our budget, working with other contractors (we purchased our countertop through another vendor), and working with the HOA when we were not available. We do not live there full time, so he kept us apprised of progress and sent pics, etc. He worked with us as we picked flooring, back splash tiles, etc. During the project, a pretty major issue surfaced and David helped us work through it, providing reasonable cost alternatives and getting the work done quickly. We plan to use David for a future project as well and highly recommend him."

"I got a great impression of these guys from the time I met them.  Everything about them and what they did from start to finish was excellent.  They kept in touch with me about when they would be there, and they were prompt, courteous, good at informing me, and willing to listen.  There was never a hint of "I know it all and you don't know nuthin'"  that so often I get from contractors.  They were very friendly and nice to have around.  They went ahead and did extra work by removing the pull-down stairs and re-setting them without adding cost.  They finished the job promptly, but in formed me about waiting until above-freezing weather so the quality of the finished work wouldn't be compromised.  They seemed to really have pride in their work.  They cleaned up after every visit and left the place spotless.  The tell me they do all kinds of home improvement work, and I will certainly have them do any other work I may need.  I have dealt with contractors a lot, both at home and at work, and out of all of them, I must say these guys are the best!"

"I bought a special offer (via Angie's List) for HomeMade Design to provide a design for one room in my house.  I was in the process of moving into a new home, organizing it, etc. so really wanted help with some interior design.  But I was so busy that the deal ended up expiring before I could use it.  I contacted HomeMade Design and they told me that all they could do was give me credit for the amount of the deal toward a future purchase.  The thing is, I can't afford their prices (even with the credit), so I ended up throwing money away.  My fault, but I wish the deal could have been a little more flexible in terms of expiration.  We (Homemade Design and I) had never started the project so what difference did it make if we started one year later?  I still need a design and they have the money.....why can't we start now?  Note:  I would have gladly paid a little more to compensate for inflation of costs, etc. during the  time lapsed."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Whether it’s more affordable to gut a house than build a new one depends on the markets where you'd be buying and selling. However, it’s usually less expensive to renovate a home than to build new construction.

Most homeowners pay between $100,000 and $200,000 for demolition and remodeling costs, whereas the average cost to build a new home is between $139,000 and $531,300.

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

A walkout basement is considered to be partially below grade because at least one wall is entirely exposed. In some cases and in specific municipalities, inspectors and appraisers will still count walkout basements as below grade, which means the space can’t serve as living space or be rented out. If you intend on using the area as living space or a separate apartment, you should check with your local building department to make sure it’s legal to do so.

Framing a basement takes three to five days, on average, when completed by a professional, though it may take longer for a larger space. Keep in mind this doesn’t include the time to complete the design, obtain permits, and install the drywall on the framing. On average, fully finishing a basement takes an average of 45 days.

Common mistakes when finishing basement walls include neglecting proper insulation, insufficient moisture management, and poor ventilation. Not addressing these issues can lead to mold growth, water damage, and discomfort. Additionally, inadequate planning, improper framing, and rushing the project can result in subpar outcomes.

It's essential to follow best practices, seek professional guidance if needed, and prioritize thoroughness and attention to detail.
