"

David was on time and very professional. He spent an appropriate amount of time evaluating the 2 areas we had requested. He documented the inspection w/ photos, measurements, and sketches. He provided a verbal preliminary report and is to provide a written final report w/ specifications for the mods we are proposing. (Removing a wall upstairs and a post downstairs.) We were happy to hear that our mods were going to be less complicated than originally thought and consequently less expensive. We have the peace of mind that the proposed changes are structurally sound and will be done correctly.

"Excellent. We selected Marks-Woods Construction because they worked with us to create a proposal and contract that met our most important goals and stayed within our budget. We enjoyed working with the designers to come up with the details on what we wanted. The construction was done by the MW team of professionals. They know what they are doing, and it shows in the high quality results."

"The quality of work performed by Randy, Terrel, and crew is unbelievable. It all started with a 3D design by Terrel which really helped us figure out what we wanted to do. Terrel helped us adapt the design throughout the process. The result is perfect. Exactly what we wanted.
We picked these guys because they had lots of experience in working with Ipe. It paid off because they did an amazing job. It's been almost a year and not a single issue with the construction.
Details on what was done:
- Replaced/repaired existing porch/deck structure.
- Wrapped entire structure with ipe lumber.
- Outdoor kitchen with granite counter tops, built-in grill and refrigerator.
- Custom ipe privacy screens to hide A/C unit and screen from neighbors.
- Hidden shed under porch.
- Hidden Garbage unit.

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

It's safe to assume that all exterior walls are load-bearing, or at least have load-bearing characteristics. Some older homes feature porches or bump-outs that don't rest on the home's foundation. However, they still must carry the weight of the roof section they support. Walls containing floor-to-ceiling glass or other non-structural elements must use post and beam configurations to meet load-bearing criteria.

Although the two terms are closely related and often used interchangeably, pier and beam foundations and crawl spaces are different things. A pier and beam foundation is made up of concrete piers and wooden beams and creates a space under the home known as a crawl space. There are several types of foundations that create crawl spaces, often collectively known as “crawl space foundations,” but the crawl space itself is separate from the foundation.

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.

Cathedral ceilings make a statement in your home, but at the cost of your attic space. Normal attics are wide open, which allows warm air to move around and exit your home. Because of this, cathedral ceilings make your home less energy efficient and put your ceiling at risk of venting issues if you’re not careful. They also reduce your attic storage space, potentially cause an echo, and even make it harder to change a light bulb.

Their expertise in identifying potential problems early and implementing durable solutions safeguards your home’s integrity.
