"It went great! Mr. Kamran responded quickly and professionally to visit a property we were selling that the buyer was trying to have us concede thousands for issues that were minor. For our piece of mind we hired Mr. Ohi who providedus with a verbal assessment which was very thorough and indicated only minor repairs were needed. When we had purchased the house the settlement cracks were already there and they had not changed in 13 years. What we did not know was that those cracks should always be filled in. It was an $800-1500 repair and the buyers had been told it could be $5000-25000 by their unprofessional home inspector, exaggerating hone inspector. Having Mr. Ohi’s evaluation, which he allowed us to videotape gave us strength to negotiate from a position of power. If we were buying a home with any suspected structural issues, we would definitely call upon him again. Very reasonable, accessible and accommodating. Wish all providers could be so professional. The key with Mr. Ohi is that he isn’t in the business to offer repair services so give so you get an independent and unbiased opinion. In short he was a terrific provider. Highly recommend."

Small jobs welcome

"Having major remodel on lower level. Contractor tried to rope me into major work (and project delay) suggesting normal cracks on cinder block walls indicated a foundation issue. When I pushed back, he put project on hold stating I needed a structural engineer to certify. I called the first two people on home advisor locally and Omid got back to me in 2-3 min, was at my house within an hour and delivered a certified report within 3-4 hours. He listened to the situation and spoke with my contractor to hear his assessment before beginning his assessment measures. He directly pushed back on what contractor stated and provided simple solution for one crack that was more than hairline. Report was meticulous, he spoke with contractor directly, and saved this project. It was more affordable than what was suggested on average costs. While I couldn’t divorce from the unethical contractor mid project—I would have been stuck with no out without the work of Omid!"

"Bashir and Noorullah were a pleasure to work with. They were very detailed, providing a full set of plans to have a load-bearing wall removed in my home. Bashir was attentive and he and Noorullah answered all my questions. I would have no problem providing a strong recommendation for Structurist for any structural engineering needs especially when it comes to your home."

"We have been working with Todd Willoughby since early in 2018. We had purchased a piece of land along the Chesapeake Bay and wanted to build a small but thoughtfully designed contemporary garden cottage for our retirement. After speaking with a number of architects we chose Todd and we have been very happy with that decision. Over several months, we worked have closely with him through the several design phases, culminating in a very complete set of construction documents, that we are now using for bidding. Throughout the process, we have found Todd to be personable, smart, perceptive and creative. He has been able to translate our ideas into working drawings that one of the contractors noted was called the most detailed he has ever seen. Todd has captured our vision for an environmentally friendly house with solar and rainwater harvesting. We have met with him many times talk through the many details, choices, and constraints you inevitably face. He has done all the coordination needed with the other specialties the engineers, surveyor, and solar energy firm. Having enjoyed this first part of the collaboration, we are hiring Todd to help us through the bid evaluations and construction admin phases. The best recommendation would be our actual house, but until we get there we can say Todd has done an excellent and professional job getting us this far, and we look forward to working with him through to a completed project."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Before starting structural engineering projects in Fairfax, review HOA guidelines and coordinate with neighbors if your project may impact shared boundaries. Check your property survey for setback compliance, then schedule soil analysis early—Fairfax’s clay and rocky soils can affect foundation plans. Arrange for underground utility marking, and plan work around Fairfax’s rainy spring season to minimize weather-related delays. Early permit applications and inspection scheduling help keep your project on track.

Helpful?

When reviewing quotes in Fairfax, be wary of vague estimates lacking written details or omitting permit requirements. Professionals who avoid on-site evaluations or don’t address local soil and code considerations may not be familiar with Fairfax’s unique challenges. A lack of local references, unclear communication, or requests for large upfront payments are warning signs. Trustworthy experts provide detailed, site-specific plans and transparent timelines.

Helpful?

In Fairfax, foundations are frequently affected by shifting clay soils and seasonal moisture, making them a common focus for structural engineering. Roof framing and support beams in older or colonial-style homes may need reinforcement. Finished basements, especially those with walkouts, often experience floor joist issues. Decks and porches exposed to Fairfax’s variable weather are also prone to deterioration and may require periodic structural evaluation.

Helpful?

For a safer, family-friendly project in Fairfax, ask your contractor to install temporary barriers and use dust control measures, especially in homes with older materials. Schedule disruptive work when children and pets are away, and designate a safe, off-limits area for them. Discuss daily cleanup routines and request background-checked workers. If your home is near a busy street or school zone, ensure extra precautions are taken around entryways.

Helpful?

In Fairfax, structural engineering projects can reveal hidden costs like additional permit or inspection requirements, soil stabilization for clay-heavy lots, and the need to reroute underground utilities. Stormwater management upgrades may be necessary, especially for properties near creeks. Older homes often require asbestos or lead testing, and if your property is in a historic neighborhood, extra review steps and compliance updates can add time and complexity.
