"Maintenance resulted in repairs being required. The Dual Capacitor on the AC unit required replacing and a leak was found. The Tech was great. He showed me where the leak was and fixed it. He also had me watch as he tested the Capacitor and explained the results to me. He had the required parts on his truck. He made the repairs and the unit is working fine. The cost was reasonable. I have a new HAVC man. I look forward to working with him again."

"The company convinced us to sign an annual agreement in December 2015 when they performed a "coupon" periodic inspection on the gas furnace. By late May they had not called to perform a periodic inspection on the central split-system air conditioner. Noticed system was running longer than usual and not removing humidity very well. Called to schedule the periodic inspection and advised them system had iced up earlier that week. Technician found refrigerant pressure was low and added 4 pounds R-22 at $110 per pound - system held 6.5 pounds total. He stated he could also add a sealer if I wanted - of course I wanted! Stated the sealer would surely take care of any leaks - additional $95. Ten days later system was not cooling well or removing humidity. Called another company referred to by a friend. That tech looked for a leak in the evaporator coil by spraying with soapy water. With none found he followed the liquid line toward the condenser unit and found the line was discolored in two places where it was laying directly on the ground - furnace and coil are in crawl space - and took photos to show me. Found the leak was in the liquid line. He stated he was not supposed to add R-22 refrigerant to a system with known leaks - for environmental reasons - and we asked for quotes to replace the liquid line and evaporator coil since it was 16 years old and quite corroded - I had also read that particular coil had historically suffered from corrosion issues. As the repair came out at 40 percent of the cost of a new system we went with a new system with a SEER rating 4 points higher than the existing system. I ended up very disappointed that the first company, 1) had not scheduled a periodic check of the air conditioner by June 1; 2) charged more than twice the per pound price for R-22 refrigerant than the second company quoted, and 3) never bothered to look for a known leak in the system. I must add that the technician was very nice and answered a ton of my questions but I believe he put too much confidence in the sealer and should have looked for the known leak before doing anything else."

"I would highly recommend Hometown Heating and Air LLC. Zach and Harrison were very professional and there work ethic Is unmatched. They were very helpful in helping us make decisions in what systems would be best based on our needs. They explained the process and there communication was on point. They went out of there way and worked long hours to get our new HVAC system installed in a very timely manner. My wife and I were very impressed and canâ t say enough to thank them for all that they have done. Our system has been installed for a couple of months now and we have seen a significant drop in our power bill. We had them install the Bosch 18.5 Seer and it has been awesome. It exceeds all our expectations. Thank you Hometown Heating and Air for making this such a positive experience. Highly Recommend!ed!!!"

"We had excellent service from Old Dominion Heating and Air Conditioning. He called us within in minutes of receiving our request for service. He was out the very next day. Found the problem went over every detail with us. We had 3 other technicians come out from different companies and none of them could find the problem but they didn't even take the cover off to look at the inside of the Mini Split. Old Dominion gave us a fair price to fix the unit and they ordered the parts and had the work done the day after parts arrived. We can say we are more than pleased with their service and would highly recommend them. They went above and beyond to find the problem. Great Job and very polite."

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

At a minimum, an HVAC system should be serviced once per year. However, a twice-a-year service schedule—once in the spring for the cooling system and once in the fall for the heating system—is often recommended, especially for older systems, heat pumps, or in climates with extreme temperatures. Regular service, which includes inspection, cleaning, and maintenance, ensures the system runs efficiently, helps prevent costly breakdowns during peak seasons, and can extend the unit's lifespan. You can also schedule a service if you notice issues like poor performance or strange noises.

Yes, AC coil cleaning is definitely worth it. Cleaning your AC coils ensures your AC unit will function efficiently for the long term. Dirty and grimy AC coils make your unit work harder to cool your home, resulting in higher electric bills. Additionally, having your coils professionally cleaned regularly will reduce the possibility of extensive maintenance and repair costs.

A dual evaporator coil is a specific design that allows the AC system to cool different compartments at different levels. It’s usually seen in refrigerators and similar appliances, but not in whole-house air conditioning systems. Talk with your AC technician about the best uses for a dual evaporator coil.

While most air conditioners can last between 10 and 20 years, they will only last this long (or longer) if properly taken care of. Routine maintenance and inspections help keep your AC unit running in tip-top shape but understanding what factors will decrease its lifespan will also help keep your unit running cool.

Some things that shorten your AC’s lifespan include:

  • Extreme outdoor conditions, like high humidity or extensive salt spray

  • Improper installation

  • Extended run times, either by the unit being too small or the thermostat setting too low

  • Not performing required maintenance

You can air condition your Arizona room by extending your home’s existing HVAC system or adding a ductless mini-split system. Arizona rooms that have full windows rather than screens only are a better choice for air conditioning—screens will let the cold air out as fast as the air conditioner can make it.
