"Highly recommend Commonwealth Carpentry. Every project has had a fair price, and easy to understand timeline for the work. We will be using Commonwealth Carpentry for some additional projects in the coming months!"

"Everything went perfectly. They arrived on time. Took down blinds and draperies, laid down tarps, moved furniture and bookcases, spackled, puttied, sanded, painted, and put everything back in place before they left each evening for 3 days. They did such a good job, I got them to paint and repair the front porch before they left."

"They went above and beyond when we hired them to build a deck for our hot tub. They not only built the deck for us but also helped us move the hot tub (which was not easy) and get all of our perments in order."

Small jobs welcome

"Mr. Davis was very fast, efficient and completed my project, a deck extension, on time. He did a great job of keeping me up to date on the progress of the project from start to finish. He even completed the project in a little less time than first projected. He not only made sure he found matching paint to the current deck, but also left the can he used for future reference, in case I want to have the paint job touched up in the future. Thanks for a Great and Professional job!!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

A-frame homes are on the smaller side. While there’s no set square footage amount it has to be, it will usually come in around 1,000 square feet or smaller.

While some highly experienced homeowners can frame a house independently, it is not advisable. You will need ample carpentry experience, a team of helpers, and professionals to sign off on your work to meet local building codes. For the safest outcome, we recommend buying or building a house with the guidance of professionals.

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Using a steel frame may raise the value of your home. Steel is more heat resistant, has better longevity, and doesn’t need any upkeep compared to traditional wood. You can also customize a steel build a little easier than other materials like brick, concrete, and vinyl—which have trouble bending and adapting to renovations.
