"FreshCoat is an excellent contractor! From estimating (Lara) to execution (Edwin), the work was timely completed and of excellent quality. From the owner of the company (Jimmy Zest) on down the attitudes were very professional, and all dealings with them were pleasant. This made what is an inherently messy project tolerable. Highly recommended!"

"Jeff arrived at our scheduled time and introduced Wilbur(painter) and asked what all needs  to be done. Wilbur was very fast and most of all neatly. He did a wonderful job painting the room. Jeff and I have been trying to schedule this job for the past month. I had water damaged to the house and cancel several times. Jeff was very understanding and told me that whenever I was ready, he would come out. My concern was the expiration of the coupon. Jeff assure me that he would honor it  at any time I was ready to use it. Jeff and Wilbur was very friendly and a pleasure to have in my home.IT WAS WORTH  THE WAIT,THANK YOU JEFF AND WILBUR FOR A WONDERFUL JOB. I would highly recommend your company to my friends and family or anyone who is looking for a painter."

"Great job by Shawn and co. Had large areas of popcorn ceiling to remove, repair drywall, prime and paint. Took them several days due to extent of work but they were there every day until it was finished. Will be using them again."

"when Jose came in to my home  to do my floors i did not know what to expect , or what the process would be like, but from day one Jose was so professional .   My floors tiles  and subfloors was in such bad shape i did not know it could be fix, however Jose took me through every  step he would have to do to get my floors and subfloors back to where it should be.  The gentleman and his workers  was so punctual, every morning he show up on time  and work completlly through out the day.  No  matter what question i asked he alway answer very politely and professionally he told me there was nothing i cant asked.  I cant say enough of this company and their workers it been a long time i that  have seen someone took such pride in their work.  Yes i would hire this company again  and i highly, highly  recommend them, i also had him scraped the popcorn celling and repaintd the kitchen for me   My floors came out fanatic.  Just like new.

"Affordable Handyman Services transormed the back of our house, adding a large deck, tying it into and re screening our screened porch, adding a door to access the screened porch directly from the deck, and removing a bay window in our kitchen and replacing it with a three-panel door so we can walk onto the deck directly from our kitchen. David Wiggins and his crew showed up when they said they would and completed the job within a couple days' of their projected finish - they had a couple of days with rainouts so essentially they finished on time. The door project also required finishing a floor where the bay window base had been, laying tile, running electric to power new outside lights, and touching up and painting drywall inside and the door frame outside. The detail work is excellent and they cleaned up nicely after they finished. We are already getting them to price another smaller project. I definitely would recommend Affordable Handyman Services of Summerville,SC."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

It’s best to use two screws to secure deck boards into every joist. Securing the boards to every joist makes the deck more structurally sound, while using two screws on the outer sides of the boards can help prevent warping and cupping.

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

Covering your deck with a breathable tarp can protect it from snow, ice, and cold winter temperatures. This is a good winterizing solution if you don’t plan to use your deck at all during the colder months. However, it might be best to skip the tarp if you’ll still be walking on your deck or using it in a limited capacity.

Staining and sealing the underside of a deck creates a moisture barrier but traps water in the boards, quickly leading to rot. No matter how well you seal the above deck, water still gets through via nails and screw heads on the surface. Allow this water to flow naturally under the deck, where it is routed through the drainage system.

Yes. Composite decking is resistant to moisture and freezing temperatures, so it’s an ideal material to use in particularly cold or damp seasons. You can install this type of decking throughout the year since it does not warp or split in the cold.
