"It went mostly well. Service Now has serviced and repaired our furnace and A/C for several years and we knew that both were nearing the end of their lives. Service Now has always been very responsive to service requests, sending the repairman (usually Jerry) out quickly. They have been fair with charges for repairs. Because of our history with them we did not shop around for a new system. When the furnace stopped working in early December, Jerry appeared at 8 a.m. the next morning even though I know that they were backed up with repair orders. They were the same way with the installation. We had to wait a few weeks because their schedule was full, but once they started working they worked straight through until finished over two days right before Christmas. Kurt sent us a proposal with several options for the furnace and a description of the air conditioner recommended to go with the furnace. We chose the one we thought would be the most efficient for our 3 story house - not the cheapest nor most expensive model. The new furnace has worked well during an unusually cold winter and spring. It makes less noise than our old one but you can still hear it at times. We haven't really been able to test the air conditioner because of the weather. They had to do a lot of work that we didn't entirely expect for the installation: drill through the foundation for the vent to go out the side of the house because our old furnace vented through the chimney. This was really a dusty job. They also could not remove the old concrete slab as originally planned for the A/C so they put a new one over it and built it up. Service Now employees were hard-working, nice, polite and they cleaned up after themselves. They taught us tips about using the system, changing the filters, and about maintenance. An electrical subcontractor was used for some electrical work and he did not clean up after himself nor replace insulation material that he removed. Other than that and the concrete dust from drilling, things went very well. The whole job took about 1.5 days."

"I wish there was a higher rating than “A” because I would give it to Absolute Temp Control. As I write this the Portland Area is suffering a heat wave. My outside unit broke and I called Absolute Temp Control. John the president of the company said he was backed up for a couple of weeks on calls, but would try to get to me if he could. He called the next day about 730 pm and said he had just finished a job in the neighborhood and wondered if I still needed help. I said “Yes!” John was at my house within five minutes. He checked my entire AC system and determined that a capacitor in the outside motor (fan) was not working. He replaced the capacitor and now my dog and me are sitting in a cool house! John also took about 20 minutes explaining to me how to maintain the AC unit (how to replace air filter, importance of a clean filter, where the various or ducts go to in the house, etc). Can’t say enough good things about John!"

"They gave me a few options. The price depended on the year and the model of the air conditioning unit. Everything went pretty well, but I decided to go with another company."

"We ended up not doing it. It ended up being something I did not need. They gave me an honest answer when they told me I did not need the insulation. My interaction with them was fine."

"From beginning to end, my experience with RK was fantastic. They weren’t the cheapest nor the most expensive, they were comfortably in the middle & worth it!! Their patience, excellent work and professionalism is unsurpassed. The wonderful Carol was so great to work with. More companies should have their very own Carol! I will be calling RK when I need my subpanel added. I recommend them without hesitation, they were worth waiting a few weeks for!!"

"Ultimately, I needed to replace the oven because Knapp could not find parts for it. Fairly new Whirlpool oven, however had no model number on unit (homebuilder got a deal). Knapp made two visits with new parts, attempted to fix, then said they could not fix it. BUT, Knapp did not charge me for their time and labor. Zero. Pleasant surprise and quite honorable of them to do this."

Subcontractors questions, answered by experts

A split-level home is one that has several staggered floors connected by short staircases, while a split floor plan separates the primary bedroom from the rest of the bedrooms. Split floor plans are most often found in single-story homes, while split-level homes are always at least two stories.

Most Greek Revival architecture homes are one and a half to two stories, depending on the footprint, which sets them apart from some Federal architecture homes that are three stories. The gabled roof on the second floor can sometimes cut into the living space, especially on smaller homes of this style, which leaves a much smaller living area upstairs.

Buying a house is easier than building one from scratch. Buying an existing home is almost always faster, even if you need to make renovations once you move in. When you hire the right team to build a home, they will simplify the design and build phases so that there is little guesswork throughout the process, but building new construction will almost always take longer than buying an existing home.

Depending on what the blueprints are for, a qualified draftsperson, contractor, or architect can draw them up. In some cases, including specialty permitting for a build, you may be required to use a licensed architect.

In many cases, a blueprint drawn up by a certified professional is required before a city or municipality approves a permit.

Framing is often the most expensive phase of building a house because it’s time-consuming and requires a lot of materials. It costs between $20,000 and $50,000 on average, depending on materials and labor costs. Before construction begins, it’s possible that purchasing land is the priciest step in the process. Some plots of land sell for $3,000, while others cost upwards of $150,000.
