"Marty Wilkins is a quality human being who is true to his word and knows what he is doing. He repaired a large gate for me and completely rebuilt an old delapidated deck for me. His sons are hard working great guys. I love my new trex deck. I plan on having them service my entire fence and replace my daughter s entire fence in the next year or so."

"Baer Construction would be the first person I would call for my next home improvement. Alan and his son were fast without sacrificing quality and were very good from a communication stand point. They came in, disposed of my old deck, but in proper framework for Trex deck and Forester aluminum railing. The finished product they built is beautiful. Thank you Baer family!"

Fencing questions, answered by experts

Fencing in Salem enhances comfort by shielding outdoor spaces from wind and rain, creating cozy areas for gatherings or gardening. Secure fencing allows pets and children to play safely, and can help reduce noise from nearby traffic. Many homeowners use fencing to screen compost bins or garden beds, keeping yards tidy and private throughout the year, even during Salem’s rainy winter months.

Helpful?

In Salem, new fencing offers immediate privacy and security, especially for homes near parks or busy roads. Over time, well-built fences reduce the need for frequent fence repair, help protect landscaping from wind-driven rain, and can deter deer from gardens. Quality fencing also boosts curb appeal and property value, and in hillside neighborhoods, it can help manage runoff and create safer outdoor spaces.

Helpful?

Be wary of quotes that lack details about materials, drainage solutions, or post installation methods, especially given Salem’s wet soil. If a contractor doesn’t address local challenges like moss, wildlife, or soil movement, that’s a concern. Reliable professionals will discuss permits, utility marking, and provide clear timelines. Poor communication, no local references, or missing warranty information are also signs to look out for.

Helpful?

For Salem’s damp climate, pressure-treated wood and naturally rot-resistant species are ideal for residential fencing. Vinyl and PVC are popular for low-maintenance fence installation, while powder-coated metal resists corrosion in wet conditions. Composite fencing is durable and withstands frequent rain. Always use galvanized or stainless steel fasteners to prevent rust, and consider concrete footings to keep posts stable in soft, wet soil.

Helpful?

In Salem, backyard perimeter fences often need the most frequent fence repair due to heavy rainfall, shifting clay soil, and moss growth that can accelerate wood decay. Fences along busy streets may suffer from wind and ice damage, while garden and livestock fencing are vulnerable to wildlife like deer or raccoons. Sloped yards and areas near drainage ditches also require regular inspection for soil erosion and post stability.
