"I was very impressed with Barnagat Plumbing. Barbara Barnagat and her son were here for over four hours; it was a challenging job and they stuck with it and got it done! They were polite, prompt, professional, and good-humored. (And I also really liked how they treated each other with utmost respect!) I felt that the price was fair, given the time and work that needed to be done. I would hire them again without reservation."

"Waxtel LLC did a major renovation on my co-op on Sutton Place South. The renovations included new bathrooms, new kitchen, painting, floor restoration and a host of other repairs and renovations. The Company is excellent and I would highly recommend them. Besides the excellent workmanship, the owner, Dave Waxtel, was extremely responsive to all issues. I have dealt with contractors many times, and I would say Waxtel is the best one I have ever used. Moreover, the price was reasonable and fair. You will not be disappointed if you hire them. If you would like to see the work performed, you can view it on Street Easy--45 Sutton Pl South, Apt. 15G. All pictures should be uploaded by 4/1/2022."

"Andy andThomas arrived 8 am to remove all remaining furniture from the living room, books, table, couch, rugs bookcases. Then they removed all destroyed floorboards. End day 1. Day 2 arrived 8am with Yanni and Thomas and replacement flooring, joist replaced, wood replaced, cleaned the slate fireplace edge/border with wood, recessed radiator had been removed and old valve replaced, insulation was put into place between the joists, lots of vacuuming, day 3 8am arrival Yanni and Thomas finish laying the floor, radiator back into recess after Yanni painted the back/front of recess panel. The basement ceiling got jolted and Thomas repaired those 2 minor plaster holes. Day 4 Terry and 2 other men, the floor crew arrived to sand the floor and then coat it, 2 days later Terry arrives to recoat the floor and project is finished. Waiting period from Sat. to allow the floor to dry then Andy shows up to move the furniture and I ask him to come back the following week, I change my mind and ask him to come back sooner, then Yanni shows up to put the radiator grill into place (modifications needed and done) then Yanni and I move the furniture back into the living room, Yanni connects my TV and cable box and glues the leg back onto a piece of furniture I had previously broken off. Terry said he's been doing this for 30 years, Yanni says 20 years, Andy never said but he was always available, on phone, in person, in text. He also came by to admire the floor. Which looks stunning. I would, will, want to ask Arta Construction to take on my other homeowner projects. I am a homeowner in Yonkers, NY and I have a co-op owner friend from Riverdale, NY who brought Andy into my house to assess the damage. He said no problem and there was no problem. Only good. BEST EVER. Thank you Arta Construction."

"Alfons was on time and ready to go. This was an emergency and I needed help really fast! He came prepared and really knew what he was doing. He's very professional and explained things in a way I understood. He replaced a a bathtub fixture rebuild and pipe in my bathroom in record time, and that was including traveling to get the parts needed. The price for all he did was comparable and amazing. High quality work, clean and professional. If you want a plumbing job done right, with quality, efficient and no waste of time, I promise you, call Alfons, you will not be disappointed."

"I had recently hired Mako Plumbing to replace a 75-year-old cast iron sewage pipe in my home and I couldn't be more satisfied with their work. From the moment Jay and Ron arrived, they exhibited absolute professionalism, were respectful of my home, and well-prepared for the task at hand. They skillfully fixed the problem and their attention to detail assured me that the job was done right. I truly value the dedication and hard work provided by Jay and Ron. Beyond the amazing technical service, what set them apart was the personalized service. They were courteous and patient with my queries. Should I ever need plumbing services in the future, I will certainly call Mako Plumbing."

Customers say: Quality work

"*Highly Recommended* First I would like to thank Tina, Angelo and the gentlemen working with Angelo (sorry didn't catch you name!) for a very professional and prompt service. Tina was very professional and accommodating when I ran into some scheduling problems with my Co-op and answered all the questions I have. Additionally, she filled out and provided all the necessary documents for my Co-op, so all I had to do was hand them in with no problems. Angelo was on time (actually waiting for me!) and was also very helpful with my many questions. The job was completed as expected and the shower looks very solidly attached. He also contacted me the next day just to make sure everything is OK and again, answered my many questions and actually took the time to show me how to make some adjustments. I usually am very apprehensive when using contractors but my experience with Hydraulics Mechanical left me with a more secure feeling than from my previous experience. Highly recommended."

Bathtub Replacement questions, answered by experts

Plan your budget, storage needs, accessibility features, and design aesthetics before starting.

If your tub is attached to the wall, the best material will be one that can be shaped to fit your space perfectly. A cast-polymer, acrylic, or fiberglass tub will likely be the easiest to install as a built-in because it can be designed to fit your space.

Resurfacing a bathtub is less expensive than replacing one. Resurfacing a tub costs about $330 to $630, depending on the material, while replacing a tub costs an average of $4,150. But remember that resurfacing is a temporary solution for a worn-out tub, and you may need to refinish a tub every few years to keep it looking new.

Technically, yes, you can put a shower on a Roman tub, but it's not common. The vast majority of Roman tubs are standalone models. Adding a shower would involve installing a ceiling-mounted curtain rod or a custom glass enclosure, as well as redoing the plumbing, making it neither easy nor budget-friendly.

There are several ways to save money on a bathroom remodel through proper planning and savvy design strategies. To reduce costs, consider the following:

  • Purchase your own materials: Buy your own bathroom fixtures, hardware, and other materials to avoid contractor upcharges and delivery fees.

  • Shop smart for big-ticket items: Save on pricey items like tiles and tubs by shopping sales and at discount stores.

  • Avoid major layout changes: Keep plumbing in its current location. Opt to replace fixtures rather than moving them to avoid significant renovation work.

  • Focus on high-impact, low-cost updates: Make affordable but impactful smaller changes, such as upgrading hardware, installing new lighting, and adding stylish but economical accessories.

  • DIY where possible: Handle easier parts of the remodel yourself, like painting or installing light fixtures, to save on labor costs.

  • Time your remodel strategically: Consider remodeling in the spring, which tends to be a lower-demand time of year and may result in lower costs.
