"I hired Tim to fix a banister and put up various shelving and picture frames in my home. He was prompt, easy to work with and did a fantastic job. His prices were very fair and reasonable for the excellent work that he did and I will be sure to hire him in the future for any upcoming projects."

"I categorized this under Carpenters because I could only pick one category. The truth is Mo fixed my leaky roof (sealed around sophets), Fixed sheetrock, framed, did some electrical, flooring. moldings, and painted an entire room. He also did some custom wood working rebuilding some steps to the second floor of my house. He also repaired missing flooring from a 100 year old hardwood floor. He went above and beyond. Had a great attention to detail. Was on time, meticulous, polite, organized and FAST. Cant say enough good things about Mo. I will certainly have him back soon to put in some doors and who knows what else!"

"Wilson did awesome work on my draws. The craftsmanship of his sanding and finishing are amazing. His time and effort to give me exactly what I needed was definitely on point. It was a plan come true for me because I had been waiting for years for someone who I knew to do it for me. I never thought about hiring anyone to do this for me. I'm grateful for Wilson who made a plan come true for me."

"This job--which I initially thought required complete reupholstery--turned into onsite repairs. Eli at ReUpholstery NYC asked for photos of the chairs, which led him to recognize that one person could rework the opened areas. We agreed on what I believe was a fair price and set a date and time. Eddie came promptly with the necessary tools and completed everything in about 2 hours time. I was very pleased with the entire experience, from beginning to end, and would highly recommend this company. THANKS!"

"Mack Rubio does fantastic woodwork. He and Juri responded within minutes of my request for new porch stairs and railings, as well as replacement of rotted fascia and siding. His work is solid, fast, and precise. Excellent skill and craftsmanship. His estimates are affordable and his team are always punctual and professional. This is my first home purchase and it is a fixer-upper, so I will definitely be calling Mack again for assistance with all of our home improvement projects. I highly recommend Handy Mack for all home repairs and renovations!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Building a barndominium means converting a barn into a house. Barndominiums are becoming popular as spacious and stylish alternatives to typical housing structures. Old barns that become houses traditionally consist of wooden construction. However, newer structures, such as pole barns, often contain metal exteriors and roofs. Converting a metal outbuilding into a house presents an excellent opportunity to create a barndominium from metal.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

The cost to convert a carport into a garage averages about $22,000, ranging from about $15,000 and $55,000. Additional cost factors to consider include size, time of year, and how much of the carport you can reuse. Other cost factors include the kinds and amounts of materials used, such as:

  • Add insulation: $1 per square foot

  • Add drywall: $1–$3 per square foot

  • Add window: $450–$2,000 per window

  • Add outlets: $75–$500

  • Add garage door: $250–$11,200

  • Enclose framing: $5–$13 per square foot

  • Replace roofing: $1,000–$2,000

Bow windows need support because they are large and extend out from the exterior wall of the home. Bow windows may extend 1 foot to several feet from the outside of the home, so you’ll need to provide additional support to handle this weight. A window contractor will be able to provide the proper amount of support for your new bow window.

A-frame homes are on the smaller side. While there’s no set square footage amount it has to be, it will usually come in around 1,000 square feet or smaller.
