"We had 2-3 years of constant road work as a result of storm Sandy (gas line and water line replacement) and there was a crack that expanded over time in the living area on the second floor. We needed to know if it was structural or cosmetic. Anthony arrived on time and began to examine the crack as well as take measurements to determine any significant changes. He was familiar with the land issues in this area, which I appreciated. He explained as he went along and also went to every room in the home and outside for any other evidence of cracks. He was extremely thorough in his inspection and advised how to correct the issue. In addition he also gave tips regarding procedures for any renovations on the property which was extremely helpful. There was a fee for the inspection and an additional fee for a written report. I would definitely hire again if I have any issues."

"Evan was great to work with! He is very responsive, kind, knowledgeable and professional. He was quick to get our work done (drawings for a permit request for a fence) and very communicative the entire time. I would recommend him to anyone looking for an architect for their home projects."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Brooklyn homeowners should account for historic district restrictions, party wall agreements in row houses, and complex zoning overlays that may affect expansion or renovation plans. Soil composition can vary block to block, impacting foundation work. Limited alleyways and narrow streets may complicate equipment access, and older utility lines often require careful coordination to avoid service disruptions during construction.

Helpful?

In Brooklyn, homes with brick facades, limestone details, or original timber framing—especially those predating 1940—often benefit from a structural assessment. Look for stair-step cracks in masonry, bowing basement walls, uneven stoops, or shifting cornices. If your property is attached or in a flood-prone area, or you’re considering a rooftop addition, consulting a structural engineer is highly recommended for safety and compliance.

Helpful?

Choose professionals with proven experience in Brooklyn’s historic brownstones, row houses, and mixed-use buildings. They should be familiar with local soil conditions, party wall regulations, and flood zone challenges. Strong communication, detailed project management, and a portfolio of similar projects are essential. Always verify references and ensure your engineer can efficiently navigate Brooklyn’s unique permitting and regulatory requirements for a smooth project experience.

Helpful?

For Brooklyn homes, opt for high-strength, moisture-resistant concrete and corrosion-resistant steel, especially near the waterfront. Traditional clay brick or stone is ideal for matching historic exteriors, while modern concrete blocks suit new construction. Pressure-treated lumber and marine-grade fasteners are smart choices for basements. Always select fire-rated assemblies and hurricane ties to meet local building codes and enhance long-term durability.

Helpful?

Brooklyn’s freeze-thaw cycles can cause brick and mortar deterioration, while high humidity and coastal air accelerate steel corrosion. Heavy rainfall and potential flooding in low-lying neighborhoods demand robust drainage solutions and moisture-resistant materials. Scheduling foundation or masonry work around seasonal weather helps prevent delays and ensures proper curing, making climate-aware planning essential for successful structural engineering projects.
