"It went very well. After two other contractors failed to return my repeated calls and one just didn't show up for an estimate, Harvey was extremely professional. He not only returned my initial call the same day, he called to confirm the time for his first visit and called when he was running a bit late. Although we thought his estimate was somewhat high at first, we felt we could trust that he would deliver and deliver he did. His crew worked very hard, finished the project in one day and cleaned up after themselves. I would definitely use him again."

"I hired Anthony after my previous contractor was always cancelling on me and not showing up. It was refreshing to have a true pro come in with 40 years experience and solve all the problems that were left in my kitchen. Anthony also had great ideas and recommendations that helped in our decision making on completing our kitchen renovation. He was very fairly priced and gave us an itemized breakdown of the costs. I would highly recommend Anthony for any project big or small. He is in my contacts for future projects!!"

"Anthony & his team helped give us our dream space. One of our favorite things about him was his communication - I don't think there was one time where I reached out via text/call & didn't get a response within 15 minutes, if not immediately. He was willing to work with us throughout the project and be understanding of our situation. Example: Phase 1 was demo, but he held off on demoing the entryway section going into the new space in understanding that it was the midst of summer & our furnace was not strong enough to get into the new space. He is also adaptable as the project progresses -- we changed our mind on the finish on the beam & communicated that to his guys effectively. There were a few 'unforseeables' that came up, but he communicated the information well & came up with a fair amount. With the additions of the project, he was nice enough to be flexible with us on the payments. I've heard hundreds of horror stories from contractors; you can certainly move forward with Anthony & his great group of guys in confidence."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.

Installing a tongue-and-groove wall requires similar techniques to those associated with installing shiplap. However, because of the precision necessary to make each board fit perfectly and the increased material prices, the cost is higher than that of shiplap installations. Expect to spend between $2 and $6 more per square foot for tongue-and-groove walls versus shiplap ones.

Converting a carport into a garage can vary in difficulty depending on its configuration, the condition of the foundation or slab, and its location relative to the house. The process has a lot in common with a home addition, but you can often skip non-essential finishes like fine flooring, trim work, or even drywall and HVAC. The conversion requires experience with drywall, insulation, and other building materials to ensure it’s done safely and correctly. While it might be possible for a DIYer with the proper tools and skills to do the work, it is a complicated and potentially dangerous job. If you’re new to basic construction, it's best to leave this project to the professionals.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.
