"I googled local contractors in the area and found Design for living. Ben and his team were professional, friendly and reliable. Playing google roulette for a contractor is scary and honestly I could not have found a better contractor than Design for Living. "Harvey and his crew were absolutely top notch!! From the first moment I reached out to Harvey I had a good feeling, and that was confirmed when we met for an evaluation of the work and an estimate. Harvey's communication is probably the best of any contractor I've ever experienced, his prices are very fair, and he's punctual! My floors look like new and the walls came out beautifully, you can't even notice the spots that were so severely damaged before! Once the primary work was finished there were a few minor touches that needed to be addressed and Harvey came personally to oversee everything was done perfectly! You'd think it was his own house he was working on, he took such care! I can not say enough good things about this man and his work, take it from me I'm as picky and as much of a perfectionist as they come! For any contractor needs, look no further than Harvey at Heartland!"

"Jeff did an amazing job with both renovations. Like many, i had a very difficult time choosing a contractor because you want someone that is honest and reliable. I priced out many general contractors and even priced out contractors for the individual jobs but Jeff was the most reasonable and was able to complete every part of the job. He was also very flexible as we changed what we wanted throughout the job. Jeff is very conscientious and responsive throughout the whole process and will make sure the job is done right. He also credited me for any extra items i purchased and was very fair when it came time to determine the final payment. I would highly recommend Jeff and in fact he is currently doing renovations to my mothers house after i recommended him to her."

"I recently collaborated with AVSTEP for various home improvement projects, including roof repair, patio door replacement, electrical work, ceiling recess light installment, new flooring, curtain rack installation, water pipe replacement and ceiling replacement. I am extremely pleased with their work. AVSTEP's expertise in roof repair was evident as they efficiently addressed and explained the issues, providing me with confidence throughout the process. The patio door replacement was seamlessly executed, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. Their electrical work adhered to the highest safety standards, and the installation of recessed lights showcased their modern design sensibility. The new flooring, curtain rack, and ceiling replacement projects were executed with precision, adding to the overall appeal of my home. AVSTEP's attention to detail, professionalism, and commitment to quality make them my preferred contractor for future projects. I highly recommend AVSTEP to anyone seeking reliable and skilled professionals for their home renovations."

"Sal and his team are thorough professional who know what they are doing. We just had them remodel two bathrooms. They finished the project on time, worked creatively around our needs and certain surprises discovered only after demolition. They suggested great, pragmatic design options. Everything came out stunningly beautiful, made to our tastes and preferences. Sal worked his magic to fit the whole project within our budget. He also threw in some upgrades we had not initially planned but made made sense during the project. His team took care of clean up after work regularly so we could continue living in the house reasonably comfortably while the work was going on. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a reliable, accommodating home improvement contractor who ensures the customer is happy."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

It’s best to use two screws to secure deck boards into every joist. Securing the boards to every joist makes the deck more structurally sound, while using two screws on the outer sides of the boards can help prevent warping and cupping.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.
