"We've used Standard Heating & Air Conditioning Inc for years and have always appreciated their prompt, courteous and professional service. Recently they installed a new furnace and AC. Jude and Alan were the installers - a day-long job. They were so courteous, professional and were always willing to thoroughly answer any of our questions. They also have a great sense of humor, making the process fun as we periodically "checked' to see how things were going. We definitely highly recommend this company!"

"Could not recommend more. Prices were very reasonable for install of an AC unit, and we had gotten multiple quotes before deciding on HVAC Doctor. Everything was done incredibly fast from the free quote to the install. The owner was very straightforward and honest which we appreciated more than anything. We will be using them for our hvac needs going forward and will be recommending them to others."

"They did very high-quality work! They replaced my furnace and air conditioning. They did a very highly professional job. They did it in one day, They replaced a Montgomery wards furnace of 53 years and air-conditioning, the new furnace and the air-conditioning work very well. A lot less money to operate, I went from a 60% or 96%."

"I was so impressed with Mike and Justin. First, I appreciated their phone call at 7:40am to tell me that with traffic, they may be 5-10 minutes late for our 8am appointment. They arrived at 8:07am. Next, they were professional, clean and courteous as they entered my home and reviewed the work, which at that time, was only air duct cleaning. They took before and after pictures of my ducts - WOW - and then offered to clean the chimney as well for only $50 (since they were already here). They were not pushy at all, just very reasonable, friendly, and efficient. Their attention to detail revealed that they took pride in their work. Very satisfied customer.

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, it’s best to turn off an AC unit that’s blowing hot air to prevent system damage and avoid expensive energy bills. If you let the AC continue running, it will put more strain on the condenser coil and compressor. Plus, if the AC is blowing hot air because of a refrigerant leak, it can also lead to a frozen evaporator coil.

The top reason to purchase an HVAC maintenance contract is the fact that it ensures you are detecting problems before they turn into expensive fixes. Secondly, this type of contract provides priority service, which is nice if it’s peak busy season. Finally, an HVAC maintenance contract provides discounts on parts and labor for repairs, which can save you a good amount of money if your unit breaks.

The simplest indicator is how long it’s been since your last tune-up. You should schedule an annual AC tune-up each spring. Beyond that, there are multiple signs that your AC needs a quick check by a professional. These issues include higher-than-average energy bills, decreased air flow from vents, higher indoor temperatures, and an air conditioning unit that stays on all the time or frequently turns on and off.

To diagnose a bad HVAC or AC damper, assess the airflow from your vents. For a manual damper, close it, run your system, and check for airflow. If air is still coming through the vents, the damper is likely faulty and needs repair or replacement. For an automatic damper, turn on your HVAC system and monitor the airflow and room temperature. Signs of a problem include low airflow, a room that won't maintain its set temperature, or a drafty feeling. If you suspect a faulty automatic damper, you may need to hire a professional for repairs.

HVAC companies may charge an hourly rate or a flat fee. Hourly rates typically range from $100 to $250 per hour, with an average around $175. Some contractors charge a flat fee for specific services, such as an inspection, which can cost between $150 and $500. The total cost of an HVAC service is influenced by several factors, including: the urgency of the service (emergency repairs after hours or on holidays cost more), the time of year, the type, size, and brand of your HVAC system, the specific repair needed, and whether you have a service contract.
